Tyre Plugs

Featured Replies

I believe they are carried by the AA/RAC to save towing if no spare is available. I guess they would not use them if there were any safety concerns but I wouldn't want to drive very far or fast on them.

The big question is do they leave the tyre in a repairable state?

The blurb states they are to be only used for short distances, more or less to either a garage or a place with mobile reception! LOL

This is what we carry now you can do 500 miles @ 65 mph and can be removed to fit a permanent plug,

FYI I've done thousands of trouble free spirited driving with DIY puncture repairs using 10mm countersunk head screws and RTV.

If the puncture is a simple hole on the main tread area caused by a nail etc. remove foreign object and inspect/clean hole, squeeze a small bit of RTV (silicone instant gasket/sealer) into the hole and screw a short screw of suitable diameter fully into the tyre ensuring the countersunk head is completely buried below the tread.

Works every time.

I haven't used those, but i have used the black sticky Tyre strips used in a similar way. They are brilliant and I always keep them in the boot. I often have people asking for a quick tyre fix.

I bought one of these when my wife had a Chrysler Crossfire.

There was no room in the boot for a spare wheel of any description, so for a relatively small amount of money, it seemed to be an ideal solution.  The majority of the reviews on Amazon are positive and there is a video on Youtube showing how to use the kit, too.  I supplemented it with a pair of snipe nosed pliers to remove any nails or screws I picked up and a fresh tube of rubber solution.

Fortunately, I never had occasion to use it, but it was cheap insurance, especially when we were touring Southern France.
