TomTom TMC Receiver

Featured Replies

Evening All,

Short Version;

Can the above item be modified to be powered by micro USB?  If so, how easy is it to do?

Long Version;

I have a Parrot 9200 car phone which gives me micro USB/iPhone/in line options, which are located within the glovebox.  I also have a TomTom Via 135 satnav.

I used to power the satnav via the micro USB port.  This not only freed up my cigarette lighter socket, but eliminated unsightly cables all over the dash.   I recently purchased a TomTom TMC receiver from the Bay of e (£20 instead of £45+ http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1311.R3.TR3.TRC1.A0.H1.Xtom+tom+tmc&_nkw=tomtom+tmc+usb+traffic+receiver&_sacat=0&_from=R40)  which is powered via the cigarette lighter socket instead of micro USB.  Can this be modified to micro USB?  Even better, is there an OEM micro USB one?

I wouldn't bother personally. Although it used to be great, TomTom are now pushing their live traffic services and the last few trips I've made with the RDS-TMC receiver, it hasn't worked satisfactorily.

If it can't pick up signal on the M1, of all places, what use is it? It's a shame, as it used to work really well, although many major routes aren't covered by the TMC service (such as the A57, M67, M60 and seemingly now the M1 between Sheffield and Nottingham.) The last time it redirected me well was about 6 months ago.

I'm currently looking at the Tomtom android app myself, but I'll save my questions about that for another thread.

Could it be there is a problem with your TMC receiver rather than the network? I have not had the opportunity to use it down South, but my TMC appears to be working fine, though I have only used it in the Central Belt of Scotland.

It could be, although it's never worked on the A57 and still works fine for other routes... it just seems as though the coverage provided is becoming reduced. I suppose whne they get around to turning off the analogue radio signal, it'll be gone for good then?
