Helllo, Not sure people are too keen on me on this site as I blew up at a few people. Which I now take the time to apologise for that..

 

Now witch the questions I wanted to ask..

 

I was wondering at what point it would be to change out the standard turbo. I have a 06 mk1 VRS on 104k miles. And i'm new to turbo cars and all that jazz. I'm always worried that my turbo is going to blow. What can I do to inspect my turbo? main things to look for if its going wrong?

 

Also, when and if I need to replace it? What route would I go down? Hybrid or standard?

 

I have no idea what the difference is as I am new to all the technical talk. I know I may sound like a complete and utter retard about it all but at the end of the day im asking for advice so I can learn some more!

 

If your going to use turbo names like the Darkside Developments website I will have no clue what your on about... :(

 

What's the difference between a hybrid and a standard turbo? What's the Pro's and cons of running a hybrid?

Change it when it starts to fail (make a noise) because some go on for ever... you can't guess when it'll go and they aren't cheap.

 

A hybrid means you can run more power.

But typically you need other modifications in addition to the turbo to do that, like a better intercooler.

So basically don't go the route of hybrid unless I've uprated everything else, such as brakes, intercooler etc?

 

Where would be the best place to get a standard turbo? New or reconditioned? as I'd never buy a second-hand turbo.

Stock you have about 140bhp.

Remapped you have about 175.

With a hybrid turbo you should be looking at 200-220.

 

Just to get that you need a better intercooler and a few other bits that I'm sure others can elaborate on.

 

But 200+bhp in a Fabia VRS is going to be pretty hairy unless you also uprate the brakes, suspension, clutch etc...  overall it's not cheap.

 

Not sure on a stock turbo personally as I've never bought one.

Was reading up on turbodynamics. If mine blows, can I fit a hybrid and only have it mapped to 170? As hyrbids are normally a better construction aren't they?

no need whatsoever for a hybrid with a stage 1 remap. If you're intent on replacing the turbo, get a Garrett rather than the OE KKK turbo.

 Mine's on almost 130K miles now (PD 100) and still boosts fine even with my heavy right foot.

Mapping an engine with 'only' 104 K miles won't be a real issue IMHO, many have had theirs remapped with more miles than you, 104K's only just run in ;)

104k isnt that many miles in 8 years is it? surely you should have many more miles out of the turbo yet. My 07 plate MK1 has only 67k on the clock and I expect alot more than double that before I even think about replacing the turbo. 

The question you need to ask yourself is do you want more power or are you wanting to just keep it "ticking over". If it's ticking over replace with a Garrett and carry on. If you want more power I'd advise replacing the Brake and Intercooler first. You wont' notice anything in power wise but is gets the car ready for when you change the clutch and turbo, plus the price of it all wont hit your wallet in one go. Also I've heard people changing out the injectors at the same time.
