Time for a new turbo?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I'm starting to worry about the sound and performance of my turbo in my vrs.

here's how it's going, when it's cold or cooled down after an hour or so, it's like the veins are sticking as the car goes nowhere, even at 2k rpm, and makes the most horrible noise, like its rattling or ticking. Even when it's warmed up a bit or after a long drive, it still has a faint rattle/ticking noise to it. BUT recently, it's been boosting like its never before and the torque is unreal! But i'm still weary of the noise and that.

my question is, is it time for a new turbo? Or does it just need a rebuild with a new cartridge/bearing?

Tah

I am not familiar with the 1.8t turbo, but if it is a variable vane unit, then check to see if the actuator moves smoothly when a vacuum is applied to the actuator.  Best do this with a cold engine, otherwise you might burn your hands....

Think it's the k03s unit? I'll ptobably be corrected if i'm wrong haha! I've been having problems with the actuator where i think it's been shutting/opening at the wrong time and it back fires? I get a pop every now and then when boost is introduced. Does that make sense?

I dont think the ko3s is variable vane. I could be wrong

No tdi ones are tho.

Not too sure if it's been replaced in its life before i bought the car, but miles at the mo is around 136k miles.
