rusty sills

Featured Replies

Pulled off the hanging paint/ undercoat from my sills Today as it had come away from the metal. The sill is all bent in and rusty. GueSs its been jacked on. Anyone else had this problem? If so how much do you reckon im looking at getting it fixed. Its slightly on the front wing too abd iv got little bits on the rear arch where it meets the sill. Hope its treatable. Ill try n upload some pics later.

When I first bought my octy it had rusty sills meeting the arch which had started to bubble slighty on the wing/arch face. It also had a rusty boot plate recess.

The bodyshop I took it to was a little place local that specialised with mx-5's and seemed like they could tackle the job.

They quoted £480 for the lot including touching up any nasty stone chips.

I must admit I had to take it back 3 times because the rust came back on the front within 4 weeks, the second i had peeling laquer on the rear and the 3rd time they got my seat dirty lol, I wasnt happy.

They took photos of the process took everything back to bear metal and removed manufactured seal. They dud alot of work when I told them to keep the car and do it properly (took them 2 1/2 weeks).

They sealed it all up, stone chip, waxoyled and machine polished (might of been other things they did but cant remember everything).

6 months on and everythings fine allthough am going to invest in some front mud guards for extra protection.

Sorry for the lengthy post but might give you an idea why its not a cheap process.

Thats pretty reasonable price I was expecting more. Is this s common thing? Did they have to weld? Id be interested in seeing the pics if you still have them?

Thing is mine werent bent exactly just corroded so I dont think welding was done. Just took them back to metal and treated, they werent damaged in anyway just rusty.

We might be in a slightly different position, Yours could need more or less work thats why a bodyshop always want to see a car before quoting.

Unfortunately I dont have photos they were on his computer and never thought to request them was excited to get car back all shiney to be honest.

Ok mate no worries. To be fair I think I can pull them back into shape. Its where its been bent and split the paint then rust has set in. I think I have a littlr bit of bubbling on the surface of the front wing. I pulled loads of wet mud from behind the wheel arches.

Its common for there to be a build up of leaves and mud which in time causing problems.

I remember reading that someone used a pair of molegrips to bend them back.

Yh thats what I was going to use lol. Could probably sand it all back myself. Its just painting and waxing it. Maybe not the waxing but defo the paint. Need the bootlid doing to as its been dented and touched up very badly. More things yo add to the list lol

This is a very common problem as a lot of garages jack up car on the sills. I have had the same on mine.

Yep bent mine back number of times with mole grips. Then used the black tiger seal to underseal it and use touch up paint on the side facing outwards.

Iv had it once on a previous car where a garaged jacked on my sill and it bent my wing out. Why the hell would u jack on the sill. The chassis is like a inch bbehind it!

You can jack plenty of other cars on the sills without damage. Octavias seem to be particularly week in this area.

That is true. i just dont like the idea of jaking on them when there is usually a decent amount of chassis you can do it on.

Iv took some pics. Although since iv bent the sills down straighter and one has split and also in areas iv only pulled the outer sill and not the inner sill. You huys reckon this is going to cost ££££

Your sills are quite bad. Although does not look like they are holed.

To do a good job on those would need the wing to come off ideally as there will be poor seal or rusty areas underneath.

I have pulled my sills back from being crushed so it is possible with a hammer, mole grips and patience.

Then I would use a wire brush disc on a drill to get that back to good metal and rustproof /treat then paint.

A garage are going to charge you quite a bit as to remove the wing and labour etc is not cheap these days.

To remove a wing your self is not major.  I did a guide on that in techi section

As your motor is yellow not a easy colour to match yourself.

Also you can get those rubber hockey puck's that have a cut out in them to sit on the sill so jacking up is not going to crush the sill's.

I use them now as i can't get jack under car(too low lol).

Not heard of these hockey pucks? Is it just a bit of rubber that sits on the trolley jack. Got a link to one? Yh i will need to take a screwdriver and a hammer to bend the rest of it out. Was going to take a grinder to it and a dremel for the hard to reach parts. Iv got no problem doing that bit. its just the wings. Think i may have to take them off and get them done and resprayed properly.

here is how to remove a wing

You could prep the wing / sill's ready for spraying and that would reduce cost a lot.

Ok cheers ill be buying one of them. Thanks for the guide. Yh I may do that, didnt really think about that to be fair. Do you think as it is now it will pass a mot. Mot is soon n not sure if iv got the time n money to get it all sorted and sprayed up.

I dont see why it wouldnt.  For now Id wire wheel the lot and at least use a good rust treatment to stop it getting worse.

Should pass MOT no problems as is not structural and not rusted through and has no holes.

But like mentioned, I would not be leaving that bare without a rust inhibitor or a rust treatment on top of it(especially in this weather)

Some rust treatment converts the rust surface and also provide a primer all in one go, so at least you know it will not get worse..

Hammerrite do a straight over rust paint would do for now don't think they do it in yellow.

I stand corrected is available in yellow. Probably not a perfect match but on the sill I wouldn't be to fussed. Here's the stuff http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/161269785394
