Trailer Hitch Retrofit on 02 2007

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

After our successful voyages on installing a new columbus, new BT kit, upgraded the PDC controller and doing various other adaptations with info gathered here I would like to embark on my next big project: The Hitch.

Since I REALLY miss it on my new car I've ordered a fitting set from Ales (skodateile.cz) and after a week or so it has arrived.

Now here's the thing, it only came with the (attached) PDF, and to be honest I'm not exactly sure what to make of it.

My first question of course would be:

I've changed the connection from the COMFORT CANBUS to the Drive CANBUS to accommodate the new PDC controller (which still runs perfectly!)

This specific (very very meager) info in the PDF just talks about a Convenience CANBUS. Now here's my thing, should I go about running new CAN wires again for this specific retrofit? Where oh where would I attach the new can wires to, and oh man will I ever stop retrofitting?!?!

Thanks in advance for any tips and answers, this installation manual is really not helping a lot....

Arjan

The new Trailer Hitch controller is a 1K0907383F SW 0100 / HW H09

You are looking for an orange/green and orange/brown twisted pair. I would imagine there is a such a feed to the rear lights (as I suspect coming home lights are part of the convenience network), and also to the boot locking. Failing that the convenience module is high up behind the glovebox on my 2008, or you could go to the gateway itself which is possibly in a similar place on your 2007 car.

I know when fitting PDC the advice was to tap into the twisted pair 'as close to the CAN gateway as possible', but didn't really understand why.

Adam, are you saying that it could be tapped into almost anywhere without any negative effects?

Yeah I read that advice but can't see why either.  Perhaps it limits interefence in some way (which is I understand the reason for the twist), but that is all a bit beyond me given the length has presumably the greatest impact on this and that is pretty much the same wherever you make the connection.

There is advice on my-gti.com site regarding upgrading the PDC controller that you could  tap into the CAN wiring at the xenon module as well as at the CAN gateway, so given this I actually figured it was a bit of a red herring, or at least a largely negligible issue.

I would happily listen to an explanation though if I am wrong.

Hi Guys,

Well actually I've already ran the new wires when upgrading the PDC  (you might remember , with your help :) ) So I've tapped into the CAN gateway installed just behind the glovebox (actually it's in a Non-UK car in the same physical position, only then it's left side of the steering wheel). The twisted pair should (just like in Ethernet wires) resolve any interference. But my main question would be if I can tap into the same line on the PDC controller, or it should be attached to a different line.

Getting to the rear lights will be an easy one, it has coming home light from the factory, and I could also get into the boot-switch if needed.

It's just that I do not want to solder it to the wrong CAN section ;)

Thanks again!

Hi Arjan

Yes I recall helping you. Its definitely NOT the drive CAN you tapped into for the PDC though. As I said above its a orange/green and orange brown pair...

Thanks Adam.

I've got to run a cable to the fuseboard but really don't want the hassle of having to tap into the CAN wires by the gateway again when I could tap into wires in the boot area.

Will have to look into it further.

Agreed. What are you fitting?

Also been chatting to Mike H tonight and he connected his rvc to the can network at the Columbus quadlock. Again not right at the gateway with no ill effects it seems...

Thanks guys!

Will get to work finding the right wires and will let you know how it turns out!!
