How does 4X4 work?

Featured Replies

Just got my new Skoda Octavia 1.8 L Elegance 4X4 Estate.

I never had a 4X4 before.

Is reaction being applied to all 4 wheels all the time, or is it decided by the car's software?

Can I switch it on all the time, or switch it off all the time?

Can I as a user control ANYTHING in connection with the 4 wheel drive? If so, should I?

I would like to be able to turn it on only in snow and ice, but it don't see any options related to the 4wd. I can't understand the manual on this topic.

Have a look at this clip, it is on a Golf MK 7 but the principle is the same.

Thanks Freedom. So I guess this means the car's onboard computer does everything and there is nothing that I can, (or need to), configure?

Pretty much, it all works seamlessly to you as the driver.

That is correct, the Haldex system, in my opinion is a fantastic piece of kit, it does everything for you.

What you will need to remember though is this, if you are on wet muddy grass or snow, in an old LandRover you would rely on tick over to get you out but in your car you will need a higher engine speed so as the computer can apply the brake to the spinning wheel and divert drive to the wheel that has more grip.

Just drive and enjoy your car, everything underneath will do its job without you even knowing.

About the only thing you can change is the ESP/ESC setting to Sport in the infomat.

Not quite sure what that does for you mind and I've left it un-ticked.
