Adware tracking cookies.

Why do these potentially cause ' a threat'...according to the Super anti spyware' results sweep  that I've just run?

I thought cookies were supposed to be ok and essential, but hey, what do I know about I.T. ey?

Correct...not a lot.

in Firefox, Settings>Privacy then check the box that says Tell websites I do NOT want to be tracked :)

But some sites insist on having them according to the messages that pop up after I've cleared them all.

Even the BBC weather!

I thought cookies were good anyway.

I'm baffled.

AFAIK cookies can't install malware or viruses but they do remember your preferences and site history. Even that porn site you frequent :p

You can decline cookies though :)

So nothing sinister will happen if i 'decline' then?

I'm useless on these things, even after 11 years they still baffle me.

Only got my avatar piccy up by good fortune. :D

It was supposed to be a moving one, but it didn't happen.

Cookies are a way for websites to remember you after you've gone and while you're there. Websites are inherently forgetful and without things like cookies they drop you from memory every page.

Most have pretty boring stuff in them, most of the tracking is just picking up you've maybe been on motoring sites so on the next sites you'll start to see tracking ads for cars or car insurance that sort of thing.

I run adblock on firefox and I've not really seen a web ad for years.

This. No need for adds - even on IE there is now a version of Adblock (though I haven't used IE except at work for years and there we are stuck on IE8 as they are XP machines  )

We use IE8 at work because there are issues with many ancient bespoke application. It was a struggle to get everyone hoisted up form IE6. And that's with the majority  on Win7 now.

I use FF at work and IE11 but I've quite different requirements from the norm.

If you use IE, there's an optionto over ride cookies, and site dependant.
