Campsites north of Caen?

Featured Replies

Hi

I will be driving down to Brittany in July and am wondering if anyone can recommend a camp site for one night.

Or a very simple hotel.

I just need somewhere quiet and pretty to get some sleep.

There are a few quite nice sites around the Baie de Somme, and some nice restaurants in Le Crotoy and St Valery.

This site covers France: http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/

Between Boulogne and Etaples there are a fair number. A bit further down there is the municiple camp site at Caen itself. Then one nearby Pegasus Bridge/Ouistrem.

If you use Google maps, zoom in over your chosen area, then lots of sites have put themselves "on the map". More French sites are decent than not, and it is usually pretty easy to tell the difference before you commit yourself.

Cheap hotels - the French must have more low cost hotel chains than anywhere this side of the Bosphorus.

Pretty basic like F1, where you usually have to go out of your room for WC and shower. Don't have the breakfast! However cheap it is - its too much.

Etape/Ibis Budget, Premier Classe, Balladins all in my experience offer en suite facilities. Not all have the 3 beds per room, should that be something you need.

Next up come the Campanile, Kyriad and Ibis and probably in the order for facilities and cost.

Like the camping, a zoom into google maps will show them, often on the outskirts of bigger towns.

Any tourist infomation/Maison du Tourisme place should be able to tell you where local places are. My experience is that they will even ring up and book an hotel or Chambre d'Hote. They will certainly have leaflets and directions for the campsites. Limited opening hours is the only drawback.

All the cheap hotel chains I have used have had night entry, either an ATM type machine or a concierge - shove your card in the hole in the wall outside and it will allocate you a room if they have one. All entry is keyless.

Ta.

Quite fancy being close to Pegasus Bridge..I will look at that one.

There is an Ibis budget in Caen so that is also an option as the one I used in Chatres was good.

Pegasus Bridge is inspiring, sad, frightening, and thought provoking.

The Museum is very good, but also walk around and see the plaques that show the various glider landing sites, and don't forget to have a coffee or beer in Cafe Gondree.
