speed noise??

Featured Replies

OK, having taken the VRS up to 80 it pulls like a train and is smooth as the proverbial babies bum, however at 90 there is a slight "buffeting" noise, as if a window is open ,then as you approach 100mph the noise becomes markedly louder ( all this on a private road of course..:rolleyes: ), not sure how to exactly describe the noise or sensation, but its disconcerting to say the least! I'm guessing its a wheel out of balance, though the steering wheel doesn't judder, no uneven tyre wear, nothing obvious at all.

Is this normal? I'm kinda hoping not, as i don't want to have to stick to speed limits ALL the time!! Might as well have bought a Fabia!! :D;)

Hoping someone has the answer...Goose

I wouldn't say its 'normal'. I get no such noise around those speeds in my RS. Have you noticed this sound before and have you changed anything to create the problem (tyres/alloys etc) have you recently curbed the alloys? Go and get your wheels checked for balancing/tracking to eliminate this possibility.

Only just bought the car, 51, 2002 with 60k. On my way into work today took it up to the ton mark, all is well till 80, becomes a little vibration, gradually increasing in volume and intensity until around 100mph plus, when it really becomes undriveable above that, the arm rest really vibrates, mild shimmer to the steering wheel, noise seems to come from the back of the car though the car feels planted but just like either the shocks are damping at a squillion miles and hour or, like you say, the wheel is out of balance? There are a couple of very light scuffs to the n/s wheels, but nothing major, the weights are still stuck on too, i can only describe the noise like opening a window at speed and the vibration as a pneumatic drill speed type bouncing.

Hope the description makes sense, trawled through some posts on wind noise, doesnt sound like that, but i guess i'll get the rims checked first then perhaps the shocks, just was hoiping someone in here would say..ooh yes its such and such....time for me to start trawling through for the best aftermarket sussies i guess?

 Just FYI, rear offside wheel was 40g out in weight....translate as you see fit, but it was re-balanced and has cured the problem completely, now very happy  until the next thing, the squeaky rear brakes :o
