Buying a sat nav

Featured Replies

Hi everyone hope all is good. Basically i have a skoda octavia 2006 plate 2.0 tdi pd with a standard steam head unit. I wanted to buy a sat nav mfd3 i wanted to know would it be straight plug and play? Or would i need to change things around. I have looked at so many threads on this site i think i have gone crazy. Something regarding got to change the can because the battery might drain. So the key points i wanted to know.

1) Will it fit in my car?

2) Does anything need changing (reprogramming?)

3) Is there any special things i need to keep a eye on when purchasing one

4) is clombus rns510 same thing as mfd3? (Sorry might sound stupid)

5) would i be able to tv + reverse cameras + DAB?

Thank you sorry for another thread on sat navs

1 - yes but facia will need replacing as it won't be the same size as the stream

2 - 06 will mean you need a canbus upgrade as part of it (probably behind the glovebox on yours) you will need someone to code the navigation with VCDS too.

5 - Yes to reverse camera, but you will need to do cabling, and probably upgrade the Parking distance controller to an OPS unit if you want that showing on the new headunit.

not 100% sure on the rest of it.

Wow quiet a bit to do then thank you

To add to above:

3) Be mindful of stolen units on eBay. Make sure you have a code and not one with the code hard wired into the unit.

4) Yes. Columbus is the Skoda version of the RNS510.

5) Doubt you can get TV but a more recent Columbus will have DAB. Often expensive though.

A software update can usually deal with battery drain so you shouldn't need a new CAN although some kinds of reverse camera might then not work. I only know of one user with a Columbus still causing battery drain after the update and I suspect that is a problem with his unit.
