Question about headlight cleaning

Featured Replies

I read online a while ago and tried it on a BMW I had with badly coated plastic headlight lenses, that tooth paste works. And it did. PS. Don't use YOUR tooth brush.

Once the protective coating on the plastic headlight is removed then it will rapidly and continuously yellow and become opaque on exposure to uv. Only then can you use a mild abrasive such toothpaste because the damage is already done.

Even if they go cloudy, just get the wet and dry out. I wouldn't expect Octy 3 headlamps to be going cloudy for at least 7/8 years though!

I agree, I got near7 years from my mk2 with no yellowing at all, even in Australia. I did clean the headlights carefully though.

Bearing in mind how quickly the headlamp washers drain the screenwash reservoir I'm surprised anyone has had to manually clean their headlamps! So far, I've found that regular turtle wax wash n wax does the job as part of a normal weekly, occasionally fortnightly, cleaning routine and using microfibre wash mitt of course.

The base Octavia I have does not have headlight washers and to be honest I don't think they would be terribly effective in Australian conditions.

By the time you realise how badly the lights were affected by insect collisions they would probably have dried out and baked on in situ and beyond a mere squirt.

Not unless they had the power of TMWMNA's famed Karcher (and a larger reservoir) :)

When they get that bad it is time to stop for a coffee and general window and headlight clean.
