As above the eml light doesn't come on when the key is turned on. Is there a way to check it with vcds?

Only fault code is a coolant temp sensor.

On some Skoda's the EML doesn't come on with the ignition switch.

CTS (coolant temp sensor)is a very common failure & doesn't usually trigger the EML when it fails. If the CTS ECU output fails the ECU will not be fuelling correctly. Replace the CTS with a genuine VAG part only. Buy cheap, buy twice.

If you have access to VCDS/Vagcom you can do an instrument test which will light the EML.
