So much for German engineering

Featured Replies

I think from the way the service engineer was saying " a known issue " apparently they have to put some sealer and that needs to cure for at least 8hrs therefore leaving it longer than this is preferred so more of a 24 hr job really before turning the engine over and them inspection of said job

That sounds a proper bodge to me- i'd get some more info on exactly what they're doing because there shouldn't be a need to pump a gasket full of sealant and allow it to 'go off'. Cover off, replace gasket, smear of grease to held seal and that should be it.

Cylinder head distortion due to overheat ? That would be classic VW.  Think No 1 cylinder head gasket early marques VW Golf.

Rather than take the head-off and skim the rocker mating surface flat, they squeeze some "hard" silicone sealant onto the uneven bits and then bed the gasket into that ?

That would be a bodge.

It's never over heated but I will get the exact info as regard what they do but defo the rocker cover that's the issue

Maybe that's what they do but I will ask the right question when it goes in

Any joy on this seb?

Car is now fixed (apparently) they removed the oil filler neck thingy? And use a gunk welding bonding agent thingy, this needed 8 hours to properly set and now car is back with me , I have checked to see any signs of the work carried out but nothing, I did not receive any paper work of the work carried out but they said its been sent to vw for warranty ? Should I have received any paperwork .? Well it's fixed now so happy, I was loaned the mk7 golf with same engine as my mk6 and I won't be purchasing a mk7 not a nice car

Good news that its now fixed, I suppose its something a little different with the leak being from the oil filler pipe I can understand why bonding agent was used. I agree about the Mk7 it was quickly ruled out based on looks and price from our choice list, I wasn't overly impressed with the cabin- it felt like a step backwards from the Passat we were looking to trade in.

Agree the cabin felt cheap dare I say more fabia like than golf ! I'm not sure which spec I used must be the lower but compared to the match , it's no match :)

Agreed- looked at the budget we had and ruled out the SE spec as being too expensive for what it was. Looked at a Rapid and a Toledo and the interior fit./ finish didn't seem really any different. SEAT met the value of the Passat so the Toldeo was ordered. Would have liked to kept to VW but there was a real struggle to shell out on the Golf when the Skoda and SEAT offered more for similar quality.

That's odd, I tried a mk7 Golf GTD and it was just a little bit better than an Octy vRS in terms of interior quality IMO.

Maybe the Golf was a lower spec one Seb?

A lady at work has a Golf S that's around 5 years old and it's really cheap and cheerful inside.

So they've bodged it then....

Any backstreet spanner monkey would have done that.

I'm used to filler necks being brazed onto rocker covers at the factory that makes them.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was a bog standard but had the auto wing mirror folding and now the electronic handbrake

indeed its the S I had experience of. Baulked at the idea of paying £22k for an se. Its also chuffing bland inside as well, an expanse of centre console with not much in it for big money.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh well had to go to the new vag superstore today in Llandudno junction and left my car there , they thought it may be the injectors leaking as they've had several of the crtdi engines popping out the injectors , this may be a recall as well as the. Dsg cars ! , well no apparently they didn't seal the oil filler neck properly first time round and now they have ! Words I will be having tomorrow when I pick up the rabbit , what a joke ! , I'm defo going Japanese next !

If its any consolation Seb, all VWs end up leaking oil some how. Perhaps your Golf was a 1.3 Ryder in a previous life? Has it sorted things now?
