Huddle or kindle fire?

Featured Replies

An oap friend of mine wants to take him tablet shopping

It will mainly be Facebook etc and needs to be easy to get on with

We have 2 kindle fires in our house but i must admit to not using them much

I just wondered if anyone's tried Tesco's Hudl machine in comparison or any other recommendations

Price bracket £150 tops I would think

Thanks

I've not tried either personally.

But both seems to be well regarded for the money.

The Kindle is tied into Amazon's ecosystem which your friend may or may not be happy to be part of.

The Hudl is more of a standard Android tablet but does have a fair bit of Tesco guff built in.

Amazon's support is very good and a UK call centre (Edinburgh I think), they also tend to be very generous with warranties and out of warranty claims.

You might also want to look for a 2012 Nexus which you might get under that budget. It's still very good even with the newer one out and might be a bit of a bargain.

How are your friends eyes? Would he benefit from a bigger tablet, the screen area on a 7" isn't that big really especially if you want to do a lot of reading on it.

[edit] You can get a v2 Nexus 7 for £150 16Gb (a bit small for video)

The Range are doing Samsung Galaxy Tab 7s for £89 and Asus Nexus 7s for £115. They are fully refurbished however in the majority of cases they are brand new units. Might be worth a looksie!

Good point,never thought about size

Al ask him if 7'" is big enough or not

I can recommend the Nexus 7 if he dosen't mind using the smaller screen, has basically taken over my laptop when I am at home for various tasks,

Si

Some good deals on the HP slate 10". Quite a bit cheaper than anything else I've seen that isn't a Chinese no-name.

My two sisters (8 and 11) both have Hudls and they get on great with it. I think it is a good bit of kit too, but in my view I would prefer a bigger screen.

Can't help with the Kindle though :(

The screen on those will probably be too small - how about an Archos 80 or Archos 97 - cheap off ebay - vanilla Android and, whilst ICS and not Jellybean will potentially have less of the recently advertised security issues associated with the latter.

Hudle is more versatile than theKindle fire, which has bespoked Android software

I'm sure someone posted a deal on hotukdeals for the 7" Asus memo pad (same as the nexus 7,but with memory card slot) for under £150 this week
