Machine Polishing - Advice needed re pads etc

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have got my hands on a Kestrel Sim 180, unfortunately I need a backing plates and I know beggar all about pads.

Gone for a rotary as the primary need is to polish the windscreen.

So backing plates, which should I be going for? I was looking at getting one of these;

or

or

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polishing-machines/cleanyoucar-ep801-compact-rotary-polisher/5-flexedge-backing-plate-m14/prod_869.html

When it comes to actually getting round to looking at the paint, I am going to use Gtechniq P1. Will I get decent results with just one type of pad or do I need a couple, in which case which are decent? I have been looking at;

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polishing-machines/cleanyoucar-ep801-compact-rotary-polisher/diamond-cross-black-finishing-pad/prod_860.html

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polishing/chemical-guys-hexlogic-pads/chemical-guys-black-5-5-hex-logic-pad/prod_686.html

And finally, I also intend to sort my headlights out, will the P1 work to use as a polish after the sanding or would I need a heavier compound before/instead of the P1?

Cheers!

I would start by giving you a word of warning....If you haven't used a Rotary before, you can do a fair amount of damage

Heat build up resulting in a burn or removal of too much clear coat,  can both happen very quickly if you don't take the utmost care

With this in mind, I would urge you to use a DA Machine instead, if you can get hold of one

OK...on a glass windscreen a Rotary will work better....even then...its a specialised job, ........also a Rotary can melt a plastic headlight in seconds (Nearly all headlights are plastic..not glass)

So..On to the question regarding pads....Those backing plates are fine....you will need a 125 mm (5/6") and a 75mm backing plate (3")

Pads...for paintwork......Lake country Medium and Finishing pads or 3M Green and Yellow pads in both sizes...or those you mention are fine

On a glass windsdreen.....dedicated glass polish and pad...not in my domain...so wait for others to recommend

Gtechnik P1 is a nice polish (Best used by hand), but I would recommend Scholl S17+ instead

( http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/car-polish-compounds/scholl-concepts-s17-compound-250ml-/prod_1018.html )........

it quickly diminishes and will refine as you go

Failing this...I'm only an hour away...I can do all this for you and give some advice and instruction at the same time

Seems you have the machine already -  but DA normally best place to start.

One comment on P1 - it does generate quite a lot of dust it has to be said.

Other than that - it does perform very well.

Agree with Chris. DA is the way to go.

I am also only in Nottingham and have a DA that I can let you borrow and show you the basics.

Chris is more experienced but I will help in anyway that I can.

Hi all, thanks for the tips.

I do appreciate the danger of a rotary and I haven't spent money without doing my research first. I plan on practising on either my tailgate (already have a replacement in the garage as mine has a scratch in it) or getting my hands on a scrap VAG bonnet.

Thanks for the offers re practical help! it is very much appreciated. I may be in touch in the future, had our new arrival today, so just trying to get some semblance of a kit ordered for when I will have the time to make a start in earnest.

One last thing.....acquired some FK1000 from Ben (above), could I use the rotary to buff this off, and if so what pads(?) do I need, or is it a matter of simple hard work and 3000 microfibres?

You can apply FK1000 via a finishing pad, but will offer no benefit apart from speed of application. I would apply with a sponge applicator pad........... buff off by hand....ALWAYS with a LSP

sorry, again I fail in my lack of clarify, my intention was to apply by hand (agains using applicators provided by the brilliant Ben) , I was wondering if you can use a pad to buff it off, but by your response id say that was a no? what LPS would you recommend, I currently have the vast stock of C2V3 (I am a bit of a Gtechniq fanboy - blame svend!)

I change my LSP's a lot ! but at the moment on a number of people's car I'm using obsession wax (aura and hybrid 86 with itus for winter), sonax xtreme protect and shine hybrid npt and Soft99 Fusso Coat. all my favourites at the moment!

and yes, as chris said, buff off by hand with microfibres !

Your LSP is FK1000 isnt it?

This can be topped up with a host of QD products

My favourite is Sonax BSD...particularly suited to a Sealer LSP

Others that I have used that will be good as well are from Gtechnik C2V3, Bilt Hamber QD, Chemical Guys v7 and FinishKare QD and all work to better or similar way to each other...Some offer better slickness, others more durability and beading ability
