Bird lime etching removal?

Featured Replies

Cursed herring gull has c.....d on the bonnet of my Octavia causing etching of the clear coat. It had dried before I could remove it

Anyone know a good way to remove it? (The etching not the c..p )

Why cant cars be painted with real paint anymore not this water based rubbish!.?

Heavy polishing and or wet sanding is only way. You need to bring rest of paint to the level of the etching so pray it's not gone right through the clearcoat....

This topic is probably more suited to the styling and car care forum as there are lots of forum members with lots more experience than me.

However, if you have already cleaned off the offending material the area will require polishing if it has damaged the surface of the paint as you suggest.  This can be done by hand with a polish designed to cut the paintwork such as Meguirs 105 / 205. (Think T-Cut, however far superior). Better results will be achieved with a machine polish, a dual action polisher being the safer option as a rotary polisher can build up heat very quickly and damage the paint.

If you are not confident in doing the paint correction yourself there is plenty of forum members that hang out in the mentioned forum that will carry out that work for you.

Hope this helps

If they are near enough :S

How long has the cr...p been on?

If not long, it probably hasnt damaged too many microns of Clearcoat

Yeah i think he may be a bit too far from you for you to do the work, although he might enjoy the drive - you never know ?

Where in the SW are you, morganic? :)  (Exmouth here)

The factory clear coat can be surprisingly thick.

After some white/green laneing in France I got a bit carried away when the steep rubble strewn track suddenly narrowed. The car had scratches which looked like it had been keyed.

The local bodyshop buffed both sides and they now look as good as new.

Hi

Thanks to everyone for responses. Gave it a go with T Cut and good polish and its barely noticeable now. Have also given it a good dose of Harly wax.

Thanks again guys.

Sounds like you were fairly lucky the original bird doo was removed before doing serious damage.  I have one mark on the mongrel I can do nothing about (been there for 10 years+ since I bought the car).
