VRS 100K service -

post-68219-0-76250200-1402435414_thumb.jpgHi All,

I've not posted for sometime now so hope I'm not treading on any toes...

First, I'm considering taking my Fab off the dealer service network due to costs/benefit analysis.  Can you recommend any Independent garage who specialise  in VAG group cars in the North London, North Herts area.

Second, while i'm at it, what 'mild mods' would you recommend.  Not really interested in silly bolt-ons and neons (my max power days are over lol) - for a start, i'll need to change/upgrade that valve thingy which makes the car semi jack-rabbit when changing up/down.  Probably a remap for performance and economy.  I've no idea what kinda price i'm looking at so would love your input.

Lastly for now, I have arms like Popeye due to the horrendous steering offline (veering off to the left).  I've had alignment all done and is 'spot on'.  Technician advised i probably need a geometry set up.  Any ideas/recommendations?

I'd love to get back to the days when I serviced my own cars, but kids, wife, pets, work, weather and F1 all now 'get in the way!

Sorry for the essay.

Cheers,

Rob

ps, why does the AC so often smell musty even tho the dealer 'changed' the pollen filter as required?

I'll be interested to hear what is suggested for solutions to the 'pulling to the left' of the car. Mine does the same and I am having it tracked and aligned when I put some new shoes on the fronts which is due ASAP. Hoping that it is just the tracking that needs sorting.

As for the Ac smelling - I don't think it has much to do with the pollen filter, have you ever read about 're gassing' the air con? Something about rejuvenating the air con gas. I am told that is how to get rid of the smell.

Hope this helps.

Thanks JRJG,

Skoda dealer re-gassed/charged the AC system a year or so ago because it was blowing out hot air when turned to cold!  Also had new disc and pads on the front - alignment/tracking only helped for a few weeks then back to 'pulling to the left'.  Went back to the Alignment garage who then advised about the geometry.

I see - so that shouldn't be the problem then should it?

You haven't got damp carpets from any leaks have you? A lot of people miss checking the rear footwells to see if they are damp at all (I suppose why would you if you didn't know about notoriously bad door seals).

My thoughts on the pollen filter not being the problem is that despite it being a 'filter' it doesn't have any odour prevention or improvement capabilities, just to take dust and pollen from the air circulating in the car.

Have you been to have this 'geometry' alignment done on your car yet? I can't say I have ever heard of it.

Another thing that could be affecting the pulling left: what tyres do you use? I happened to be reading about tyre sizes last night on Brisky and read about the original tyres that were fitted to Fabia's being advised to be taken off by Skoda to prevent the 'pull to the left' ? Just a thought :)

Hi,

Tyres, all standard size - I had new tyre all round a year ago, mid range Barum's which have good reviews as they are made by continental (or someone of that ilk).  Also had Neutons from this lot...

http://www.neobrothers.co.uk/20545zr16-neuton-nt5000-tyre-p-3035.html?CDpath=5&osCsid=5079a5cb73eb7af4aba7db36b10b6c65

who also come highly recommended (see tyre review.co.uk).  I am due 2 new fronts soon and don't wanna have the uneven wear/pulling issue, hence looking into the geometry set up.  Came across this thread http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/303401-hunter-alignment-cost/ which i'm also reviewing.

  • 3 weeks later...

Which tyres did you eventually go for?

Did you have any improvement after the new tyres and tracking?

I have just had two new Toyo Proxes on the front and had the car re tracked , vast improvement to the pulling of the car. Going on a big drive ( five hours ) up north tomorrow morning so you can imagine my relief at how much better and straighter the steering is with this quest coming up shortly!

The smell is normally a build up of ammonia, a charcoal filter will help, re-gassing won't normally, it's not related. You can buy an antibacterial gas treatment to put through the system but in all honesty a can of antibacterial spray and the a/c set to recirculate will have a similar effect, just make sure you're not in the car breathing it in at the time.
