Temperature gauge on 02 Skoda Fabia 1.9SDI estate

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. i hope I have posted this in the right place.

Basically the temperature needle doesnt seem to move at all except when the engine is kept idle for about an hour, which I have tried twice in the past few weeks. The first time I tried this the temperature needle went to half and the fan kicked in, the mechanic who lives over the road from me told me it was fine nothing to worry about. However sometimes when at traffic lights when the engine is idling I hear a high pitch rumble from the engine which goes quiet again on its own accord. This sometimes happens when I first start the car or just before I am to turn it off I dont know whether the two problems are related. Today I have done the same thing let the engine run idle for an hour, after about half an hour the needle went to about a quarter and after about 5-10 minutes I went to check the needle and it was at zero again. I have checked the fans they are blowing out warm air and are working as normal.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant but I havent got a clue whats wrong with my car or where the problem lies but if anyone has any ideas/suggestions I would really appreciate it. I have thought about taking it to a skoda garage for a full diagnostic as I have tried the garage opposite where I live but it seems like he doesnt know what the problem is as I have gone with his advice (as above letting engine run idle for an hr or so)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Fluid levels ok? I'd start off by changing the sensor, it's only a few quid and there are a few guides on here how to so it, top tip - drain first - it will go everywhere!

If that doesn't sort temp guage out, could be thermostat or overflow bottle

As for the rumble... Put ur ear under the bonnet - where does it come from?

Oh and don't forget to reset the error code :)

Thanks for the speedy reply I will give that a try. Replace the temperature sensor you mean? Drain what? Sorry for asking silly question but I am a novice. Thanks.

Yep, costs under £10 to buy

Drain the coolant or it will drain all over the floor

On another note, mine stopped working due to previous owner pouring oil all over the engine and it dripping into the sensor!

I'm on my phone otherwise I'd find the link for you - it's on here somewhere :)
