gearbox drain bolt

Featured Replies

Does anyone have the part number for the drain nut/bolt. Its the 17mm allen key fitting. I've been underneath the car today and noticed it leaking. What's making me panick more though is it doesn't look like its threaded in right as its sitting in uneven. I did a gearbox oil change a few weeks ago.

Is it a 17mm thread? I may need a heli coil kit!!

It's M24x1.5 thread. You need to rethread for an oversize plug.

I thought the heli coils let you keep original size? Oversize hole then insert. I've never done it before though!

The problem here is you don't have a through hole (take a look at the plug), so it is difficult to do. An M24x1.5D Helicoil kit requires a 24.5mm hole (drill not supplied in the kit) that must be dead center and not too deep or you will damage the seat that the plug seals against. You will find the Helicoil insert is too long.

On the rare cases we have seen this, we send the box out to an engineering firm who create a larger threaded hole and seat for the end of the oversize plug.

Thanks again for the help. I'm off work tomorrow so weather permitting I'll take it out and see what's up.
