Plasticky clicking/ catching sound when first started

Featured Replies

As title, when starting first thing in the morning I get a plasticky clicking/ catching sound. It's once the car is started, not during starting.

The noise is slightly like when you used to put them things on your bike frame which caught in the spokes!

The noise goes after a few seconds as if the 'oil then gets fed to the dry part' would be my assumption.

Help would be appreciated incase it's something major!

On What car,

what age,

what miles,

what engine?

  • Author

That would help!

1.2 tsi. Not sure of engine code.

  • Author

24,000 miles, not exactly high!

Hopefully someone can help.

How old is the car?

What servicing has been done to it, any work done at a garage,

and anything else happened with it.?

I am thinking a Belt, Belt Tensioner or the likes.

i know nothing about 1.2 TSI though.

Hopefully. 61 plate, Monte Carlo, 1.2tsi.

I'll try get a video of it in the morning.

Full service history, to be fair though mate, the car could be brand new & make the noise. Non of the above would help solve the issue!

Belt tensioner. That's a good call!

Full Service History.

What is that?  Has it had Fixed or variable Servicing,   Minor, 1 year /10,000,   Major 2 Years/ 20,000.

Or one Variable Service?

If under Warranty, then best have a Technician listen to it.

I thought camchain when i read that. So i did a search, and found this....

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/252849-12-tsi-timing-chain-recall/

Relevant or not, im not sure

Nail on the head with this mate. Without a doubt, a rattle like noise on cold start up.

Still under warranty so I'll be phoning skoda tomorrow!

Thanks for your help lads!

I agree with George.

And do it quick time. Youre still just in warranty arent you?

Sorry, i typed the above too slow haha.

Yeah warranty Runs out in sept.

Just a quicky, is the problem resolved by replacing the chain completely?

Looks like its a stretched chain, reading that thread.

If that is the case, then a replacement chain and tensioner while your at it, id of thought.

Happy days that it went now. You wouldn't wanna be paying for that out of your own pocket in 6 months time.

Edit: having said that. Isnt it a hydraulic tensioner? Im not sure if they'd replace the tensioner or not. Im sure George could elaborate on that :).

Isn't it just!! The question is, how reluctant are skoda going to be to replace it!

As long as you get it reported now mate, and get them to make a note of it, you stand a better chance.

If they dont do it, and it gets worse in 6 months it gets and they do find and replace, you csn always say 'well i told you about this 6 months ago when it was under warranty'. Youll defo stand more of a chance.

They should of heard of the issue before anyway. As long as they can hear it for themselves id of thought theyd be able to tell straight away what it is. I thought camchain and i havent heard it and im just a plumber haha.

The Skoda Warranty will have to make the Fault Good if it is Manufacturing or Material Faults.

The Workshop you use will be diagnosing the Fault, or Faults and should be OKing the Warranty Work with Skoda,

they are paying.

Just dont accept 'Sticking Plaster' Repairs, if replacement parts are required.

But once the Job is Started then you should be covered if the Correct Work is not carried out.

Give the Technicians the Benefit of Seeing & Hearing your car,

& see what is found or Diagnosed.

Hopefully other members that have experienced the possible same issues will be along with their experiences.

Do not panic, you are good with the Warranty.

(if everything does not go as it should, diagnosis and repair,

you can always get second or 3rd opinions.)

But that should not be necessary.

George, im curious now. If they decide a replacement chain is required, would they also change the tensioner while theyre at it?

I know i certainly would, but im only familiar with spring operated automatic tensioners and manually adjustable ones, not hydraulic ones.

I would expect them to.

Any more info on this? How did you get on?

Hi buddy, cars going into Stockport garage this Saturday to be checked. They did say there isn't a recall on it, HOWEVER, there is a campaign to investigate a known problem!

Thing is, literally the morning after I made the phone call & booked It in, the sound has vanished! So I could end up looking a right numpty!

Thats good news. Apart from the second bit. Hmm im sure itll come back :). Maybe its cos the weathers warmer so the oil is already a little thinner at start up?

Just clutching at straws there.

Good luck
