Getting bits "right"

Featured Replies

Right, so having had the Scout for 2 months now, having done the Fuelly thing and the GPS vs Impulse vs speedo thing, I came to the follow conclusion: the specified tyres are the wrong size for the car's factory setup.

Apparently Scouts are supposed to run on 225/45's. Mine came to me with 225/50's on (Nexen 8000's). GPS vs impulse vs speedo comes out at 70 vs 70 vs 72 and MaxiDot reads 44.7 on the long-term mpg average, vs Fuelly's 45. So things do seem fairly spot on. I can't see any evidence of the previous owner having VCDS and having fiddled with the coding.

Whilst not seeming to be big change, according to a tyre size calculator, it equates to 3.63% which seems to be enough to make everything "work properly".

Also, whilst not being a huge amount of change, the mileage between services should be more accurate too as the car will be going as far as it thinks it would be going and not coming in early ;) ;)

Your car came fitted with the correct size tyres.

225/45 R17 is an incorrect tyre size for the Scout. As you say it should be 225/50 R17 94W.

The vast majority of Scouts leave the factory with Dunlop SP01 Sport's fitted, although there was a period where they use Pirelli Zero Rosso's.

I've seen a few used Scouts advertised and in the pictures you can tell straight away when they have the wrong (lower profile) tyres fitted, they just don't look right.

Will be heading to SP1's when I have to change, happily though they all cam with 6mm+ on. One was replaced 2 days before I collected the car :)

Nexen are a good tyre, you've no worries there.

I'm on my third set of Dunlop's on the Scout, the third set going on literally just a few weeks ago (straight after an alloy refurb - bloody Proteus diamond cut alloys!).

Quite a few people had cause for complaint (cracking in the tread) but all mine have been spot on...

Is that a little contact scar behind the wheel or just a trick of the light?

That's the remainder of the soap bubbles on the ground reflecting on the wet bodywork after washing it :D

My BiL has an Alfa Summat. The tyre size is 225 50 17. He uses the same tyres as me except the size. His tyres cost about £10 each more. Which may explain your fitment.

Not seen a Scout in black before, nice. I prefer the wheels painted.

I had to do a lot of rectification work on various Triumphs back in the 70's when they came with diamond turned bits. Corroded just the same. Plus ca change...
