VRS - Spanner Symbol on Gear Selection Indicator

Featured Replies

Last Thursday I had my Fabia Mk2 VRS booked in for its first MOT. The day before the MOT my wife mentioned that whilst she was driving the car she noticed a spanner symbol flashing where the indicator showing you which gear you are in is so for example if in D7 it flashes between D7 and a spanner symbol and happens in any gear and regardless of using manual gear shift or automatic.

On the way to the dealership to drop the car off for the MOT I noticed the same thing too so I asked the dealership to look at it after the MOT had been completed. They checked it and advised that it looks like it would be fixed by replacing the gearbox oil with mineral as part of the recall but when they checked on the system there was no recall listed against my car so they would get in touch with Skoda and call me back later in the day. I asked them if they thought it was a mechanical and the reply I got was no and should be sorted by oil replacement and software reset. I was also asked to take it easy with the car so I went home last Thursday and haven't used it since as I currently have a spare car.

Didn't get a call that day so chased on Friday to be told they were still waiting for Skoda to come back to them and got promised a call back which again didn't occur so rang back on Monday again to be told I will get a call back and again no callback. Rang again on Tuesday to be told that there was still no response from Skoda but the car would need to be booked in and as they were in the area today they would pick up the car from me. Guess what, no one turned up so instead of calling the dealership I will be on the phone to Skoda Customer Services tomorrow.

However, I have noticed today that there appears to be an oil leak from my car. Checked engine oil levels and appear to be ok so my thoughts are that it may be gearbox oil - especially due to the flashing spanner symbol on the gear selection indicator.

The oil is falling in three spots to the right of the centre if looking at the front of the car. Since Thursday I have only moved the car up and down my car port to fit in my other cars and have noticed oil falling in every spot I have moved it to. The largest diameter of one of the leaks is around 2-3 inches. I have looked inside the bonnet and can't see any fluid but not being brilliant with the mechanics I wouldn't really know where to look.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem or has any ideas on what the problem could be?

The car is just under 3 years old picked up 1st July 2011 and was one of the first batches of MY12 with black pack to be shipped to the UK but in now out of warranty as it has done 68k miles.

Should also mention the engine was replaced at 28k for piston cracking and scoring the bore leading to no compression in one of the cylinders

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have never heard of the same thing on a vRS,  but i would not drive it again until it is looked at by a Specialist.  or even a Skoda Technician.

Call Skoda UK or Skoda Assist and have them to arrange the cars collection.

The Garage that did the Engine work might well be responsible for any failure.

You might be out of Warranty by Mileage.

But SKODA are doing a Service Campaign on DSG's due to Manufacturing, Design or Parts failure from VW building the Gearboxes.

So there is good cause to question what is wrong with the DSG no matter the mileage the car has done in 3 years.

There is a Warning Light Symbol & Message that appears for Overheating Clutches.

see page 24 of the Owners Manual & page 99

(it should not be a spanner,

but maybe it is on yours or the Spanner is something else..)

They had no idea at the Garage and no right to say the Service Campaign Field Action would deal with what ever was wrong.

68k miles on a vrs! Woop woop. Shame its not on one engine though *sigh*

I know of a 100,000 mile plus Seat Cupra 1.4 TSI on its original engine, and it is regularly thrashed.

& it has had a Stage 1 APR map in the past, and had a TMC Tuning box as well.

(not both together)

a google of

dq200 dsg spanner symbol

has various sites showing mention in reference to faults and the 'Recall' in other World Regions.

After over a week of trying to get a response from the dealership I got Skoda Customer Services involved and with their help the car went into the dealership on Saturday. Got a call back today to advise that the Mechatronic unit needs to be replaced. As the car is now out of warranty as it has been regularly serviced at Skoda they have agreed to pay 100% of the part and 30% of the labour leaving me with a bill of £155 which I think is reasonable.

I have asked the dealership to proceed with the repair but will probably have a discussion with Skoda Customer Services when they call me as the New Zealand DSG Service Campaign involved a replacement of the Mechatronic Unit. Also I still havent got an answer as to why my car isnt part of the Service Campaign.

I think you are right.  But not Right to pay or contribute anything to the cost of the repairs..

The car might be out of Warranty, but they knew the faults were there since 2011 at least.

**The Service Schedule for the car, as bought from 2010-2014,

involves nothing being done to the DQ200 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch DSG.**

They only have a Service Campaign here in the UK telling people who are at Dealerships for something else.

Around the World there are REcalls & Proper Service Campaigns were Registered Keepers are made aware of the issue.

Maybe Raise a case with UK Trading Standards if Skoda UK try to charge you any money.

It is their Design, Materials or Workmanship by Volkswagen (Skoda) at Fault.   There poor choice of Synthetic Oil in the DSG.

Skoda UK need to go have a re-think, because they will need to treat UK Buyers of Cars with VWG Gearboxes builtin Europe like the Owners in other World Regions

that bought the Identical Product and Vehicle.

Oh my goodness George this is almost a carbon copy of our experience albeit 4 years down the line, our engine was also changed at 26k and the symptoms are the same. Even the advice from the Skoda dealers was similar again albeit they didn't suggest an oil change for gearbox, simply an inspection service light reset would do it.

Also we are out of warranty and the unit appears to have failed just shy of 68k miles, also ours was another of the first of MY12 Black pack models shipped here. I've also noticed fluid of some description running in the rainwater in front of the wee car since parking up yesterday, oil levels are fine, as is coolant and as is brake and clutch fluid at least as I can tell in reservoir.

I'm going to use this case along with other advice in discussion with Skoda UK. ThIs shouldn't be happening on well maintained vehicles that are still under 6 years old and still relatively low miles.
