Mk6 Golf GTI

Featured Replies

Thinking of swapping in the Fabia for one of these depending on how my job situation goes within the next year or so. Anyone got any experience of them?

Cheers!

pretty much the same as an octavia vrs fl underneath

If anything like the Mk5 you won't be disappointed.

Depends what you want to know.

Depends what you expect.

My workmates husband went to try one. He was coming from a history of old school hot hatches and Sierra Cosworths. I thought he'd find a GTI boring and I was right.

The GTI and the VRS are a bit too big and refined to give the scares you might expect from a 'hot hatch' they're grown up. He bought an R32 in the end.

If you're coming from something a bit more mundane (I don't know what fabia you have) you might think it's great.

VRS is better value for 95% of the same car.

My mate has gone from MK1 vrs > MK6 golf and loves it. The only bit he doesn't like is the MPG :D

I have a vRS at the moment but looking at going petrol as I would be moving closer to work than I am at the moment and diesel probably wouldn't that much cheaper considering the extra price at the pumps. I have looked at Mazda3 MPS' but they seem a bit too raw and the torque steer gets a really bad write up. Also looked at - don't shoot me - Type R's with the LSD as standard but the spec available on the MK6 for not too much more ££'s pushes me more towards it

I had a Mark 2 MPS until last summer, torque steer is not an issue unless you drive like a knob.

Car was fine, anything you want to know if you go the Mazda route...ask away.

Well first of all where did you go from there haha? But yeah I was looking at the MK3 I think, seem good cars just the reviews of them being a bit hard to drive briskly on B roads put me off a bit as my commute to work is all B road! I'm between that at the Golf since they both come with sat nav and all the other goodies that the Honda doesn't!

Not really considered a Mazda before but the MPS looks very interesting and loaded with what would normally be extras, wouldn't buy new as the value seems to plummet in the first few years. However actual user reviews rather than the TopGear/5th Gear type reviews don't see the torque steer as an issue.

Quite interested in this now as a replacement for the Furby without going dramatically up in size or the need to make any significant tweaks.  What is it like to own and run?

Those mazda 3 mps's look rotten but they don't half shift along

A mapped GTI takes it up to the mps' power figures roughly anyway, can't see them being worlds apart performance wise. GTI seems to be a much more reassuring drive when it comes to the twisty bits.

I agree that the GTi would most likely be better on the twisties but I want to avoid remapping again as it creates issues with insurance. Also the MPS comes loaded with nearly every extra they could slot in and it is less obvious which I do like.

Sorry for the late response been "offline" for a day or two.

If anyone is keen on the MPS...?

Mine was a Mk2, tax is £280pa, services are the usual minor/major/minor & are reasonable in terms of cost.

MPG, if you do a typical traffic strewn commute you will get mid 20's. I averaged 29 & low 30's is likely on longer runs/motorway.

Insurance is surprisingly cheap(ish).

It was probably one of the uglier cars I have ever owned !! but I really really liked it & only saw another 2 in the 18 mths I owned it.
