Hi - Buying advice Octavia VRS

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

So I'm looking for a bit of buying advice with an Octavia VRS Mk2 Ph2 (Petrol) (FL I believe?), I'm after something a little more refined and grown up after coming from a clio 182, which has been a great car in it's time but a baby means it's time to move on. Anyway, I have a couple of questions;

  • Anything specific to the FL I should look out for when viewing?
  • I've seen maxidot mention around the forum, what is it? Is there an easy way to know it's been specced, standard after a certain registration period or anything?
  • I currently get 33-34 combined and low 40's on a run, can this be expected in a vrs, realistically?
  • Are their any must have options?
  • £10k Budget enough for a decent example or should I look at Pre FL/ try and up the budget a bit?

Sorry for the newbie questions.

Thanks,

Mike.

Any help?

Thanks.

You're probably better re-posting this in the Octy forum - you should get a helpful response there.

Cheers

Welcome Mike.

Not a great deal other than anything you'd look at on any car. Check for water leaking in to the boot. Make sure the rear wiper works. Check for uneven wear on the rear tyres. They can often need a 4 wheel alignment. Make sure a pre FL car has had it's timing belt changed in the last 40k miles or 4 years. FL cars have a timing chain. Make sure a DSG has had it's gearbox oil changed at 40k miles.

This is the white on black display in the dash rather than the basic LCD. Not essential but very useful as it gives more info and access to settings. Personally I'd try to get one that's got it. http://images.forum-auto.com/mesimages/738782/maxidot.jpg

Yes you'll get nearly the same, probably a couple of mpg less on each. I get 31 average and 38+ on a run with DSG. My manual was slightly better, but I prefer DSG.

Are their any must have options?

Depending on year you might get different equipment, but I would look for Maxidot, multi-function steering wheel, cruise control, and the jumbo box centre arm rest. You can get auto lights and wipers, mine has them but I wouldn't miss them. I also have heated seats, wouldn't miss them either. Some people like to have Bluetooth. It really depends on what's important to you when it comes to options.

£10k Budget enough for a decent example or should I look at Pre FL/ try and up the budget a bit?

You should find a nice one for £10k without moon miles on it. For what it's worth, mine is a 10 plate FL with 25k miles and it would take around £11.5k to make me part with it. That would be with 2 year warranty included though  :p

Shouldn't have a problem with that amount of money, I picked up my 09 with 50k on the clock for just under that with 6 months warranty.

I get 34mpg average on mine and it's DSG (I wouldn't have a manual one now I've sampled the DSG)

Welcome to the forum Mike.

this general question is often asked, so if you go to the Octy 2 section and search in there you'll find loads more info. Not mentioned above is camchain failures on the 1.8 and 2.0 petrol engines due to the tensioner giving way. Again there's a thread on this if you want to have a read and decide if that's a concern for you. A full Skoda service history would be recommended, plus maybe a warrenty covering camchain failures would be worth considering/a bargaining point. Some will say numbers are small, but its a new replacement engine if it does go pop. You should be able to pick up a decent one though for 10k as depreciation is higher on the petrol than the diesel option

good luck

The thread that littleade is referring to is this one http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/266114-18tsi-and-20tsi-engine-failures/

In the interest of balance also take a look at this thread http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/319563-18tsi-and-20tsi-engine-non-failures/#entry3826108

There a millions of these engines out there in a variety of VAG cars still going strong, and VAG are by no means the only engine manufacturer to suffer major failures. If it worries you and you'd rather go for something that has no chance of breaking down, get yourself a good pair of walking boots. Even then don't Google them, you'll probably find stories about laces breaking.

You're right JB, I wasn't suggesting the OP shouldn't get a TSI, just that as part of the decision making process he's aware a small number of engines have had problems. Again if the car he chooses hasn't had the latest camchain tensioner fitted he might decide to use that as a bargaining tool when he comes to buy and get a main dealer to change it which would tnen get him a 2 year warrenty on the tensioner. Just a thought....

Absolutely. I'm not saying people shouldn't have all the facts, I just think that the thread about failures alone throws things a little out of perspective.

So, I'm back, situation has changed and I am now looking at MK2 Pre FL's, the budget is £6k which seems enough to pick up a decent pre FL missed out on two perfect ones and potentially found another, the only question I have is;

The garage state they have changed the cambelt, should that be a worry? Is it a specialist job? Or can any decent garage do the job?

Reason I ask is the Clio had to be done at a specialist garage due to the locking tools used (most garages don't have them they cost around £200 and are specific to the engine)

Does anyone have a link to any they think look good? Preferably below 80k Miles and within 100 miles of Sheffield.

Cheers,

Look forward to posting more.

Anyone?

Cheers.

Timing belt is every 4 years or 60k. Any garage worth using can do it (goes for the Clio too!). If they're changing it then that's a good thing that it's been done and you can forget it for a while.
