VRS TSI - some test results

Featured Replies

So, my VRS TSI dsg is now on 11k miles and still going strong.

Been running loads of different tests and can conclude the TSI just gets better and better with age.

In a nut shell I've found the following on my trips which generally include over 100 miles travelling on mixed roads;

Driving like I stole the car,...worse mpg was 33.8

Driving normal with a few spirited blasts,...averaged 39mpg

Driving carefully and within speed limits,....best so far is 48.1mpg!!!!!!!!!

Yep, you read right,.......48.1.

I must add that I only use Tesco 99 ron fuel so not sure if this has anything to do with it and all calculations are based on brim to brim only.

Not that much worse than my TDI 4x4! Although it is improving every tank at the moment, almost got 50mpg from the last tank.

33.8? Your not driving it hard enough ;)

They are very encouraging figures, with my mileage now down to circa 12k pare annum, I might just get a TSI next time!

Interesting figures. Thanks for sharing.

I am averaging 26.7mpg over 2800 mixed miles. It is much easier for me to achieve low 20's driving normally than it is to get mid 30's when driving like Miss Daisy for a tankful. Mid 40's are of course possible on an empty motorway at 65mph, but what's the point of buying a TSI for that scenario?

I do a fair bit of mileage to be honest so able to get out on the open road. The 33mpg was whilst driving cross country at speed from Bournemouth to Gloucestershire, really booted it and still managed a good return.

Re your comment on what's the point of having a TSI, well for me I wanted a car I could both enjoy and use for work without the need for having to run a diesel and a little sporty number. The TSI can really shift if you want it to and in most traffic conditions nowadays, often stuck on a motorway see's me doing 65-70 because all other traffic is doing the same, so if it means I can get over 48mpg whilst doing so, then I'm happy, especially as I know that should I want to have fun the power is there.

I also get 24p a mile from work for running the TSI vs 17p a mile if I ran the diesel VRS so it turns out at this mpg the TSI is a winner for me.

Having a mileage allowance certainly helps towards making the decision!

Using only the cars readings (which I gather are actually reasonably accurate)...

At about 1700 miles now and my 45 mile commute of 10 miles on country roads, 30 miles on motorway and 5 miles on city stop/start, I get about 41mpg if I am very careful in eco mode with an occasional irresistible blast (e.g. impatient BMW in rear mirror needs to be taught that my car can actually go quite fast).  Long-term average is now at about 35.8mpg but rising all the time.

My current strategy is to try to get over 40mpg in eco mode during the week so that I can drive it as I please in normal and sport at the weekend.  Yipeee - it's the weekend now!

I actually find eco mode and the challenge of increasing the journey mpg quite calming at the beginning and end of a stressful day.

A different interpretation of the phrase id guess as I get low 20's in a DSG TSi when driven in said manner.

Like it was mentioned already, we all must be driving stolen cars in different ways, as I'm getting way lower mpg numbers when I "need" to. :D

I'm closer to Orville's numbers, but that's probably because we both live in crowded cities with heavy traffic. My short trips don't help either. If I'd be driving the car at a constant 65 mph it could get better, but I just can't get myself to do that...  :notme:

No difference in interpretation, trust me on this one, hence why I was surprised in the result!

Guess it all depends on journey length too as longer journey will give time for mpg to recover. Gd results tho
