Air Con - not sure if real problem or just needs a service.

Featured Replies

Yo!

Right, I switch the A/C on at 16 degrees with an ambient of 22, the a/c takes quite some time to get cold, and really only starts to progress when I'm on the motorway. All the while I'm on the go (60/65mph) all is good for some time, however, when one off the motorway and into the hellhole that is Gravesend, I get that "damp air" feeling and things are no longer cold. Having thrown my passenger out and getting back on to the motorway, it can take another 5-10 minutes to get cold again.

VCDS reports no relevant errors and I did a pressure check with the gauge-thingy from Halfords and it shows all good under the hood.

Am thinking, as it's an '07 plate, that it could probably do with an a/c service anyway, or could I be looking at a bigger problem?

Cheers

Alex

The pressure check thingy from Halfords will be the issue, the AC gas is measured by weight and not pressure. Just because you have a sufficient pressure reading does not mean it has enough refrigerant,  some of that could be normal air that has entered the system.

You need to get the system fully regassed, in effect they suck everything out to create a vacuum an then pump in the correct weight of just gas and the required oil.

So, essentially...........off for a service then. ;)

Yes.

Right, parted with £50 to have it serviced. It seems a little better, but probably needs to be quite warm outside to get the full effect.

However, the service report does say that the compressor is "weak", so that'll probably need replacing at some point.

Any ideas how much a new one would be?
