If a car has been on variable service 'plan' and service has been when/as required by on board prompts YET the car has only cover an average of 10,000 miles per year, would the extended duration between the services ( which, from my understanding ought have been FIXED, ie yearly, due to lowish, annual mileage ) which in theory could be maybe 24 months ( ?? ) between oil changes, have a detrimental effect on the car ?

If the low average mileages are the result of frequent short journeys rather than infrequent long ones, then they're harder work for the car's oil. Personally, I'd switch to annual services if it's the former.

But the oil quality sensor will pick this up, so should not be a problem and would trigger the service earlier. Remember on variable its just that with a maximum of around 18K/2 years, but it can be a lot less.

 

However, I for low annual mileage it is recommended to be on fixed 10K/12 month servicing.
