If and when should I be cleaning my Turbo?

Featured Replies

Have read many posts with turbo problems and cleaning.

I had a 59 plate 2.CR TDI superb that had turbo problems at 65k which eventually required a turbo repair kit, fitted by my local dealer at a cost to the lease company of around£175.

Prior to this repair the vehicle was taken to halfords, under instruction of the leasing company, as the car was outside warranty. They stripped the turbo and said it needed a good clean, as well as the egr valve, which they also cleaned. When they tested it, the fault still recurred and they suggested a new turbo!

It then went to main dealer, who subsequently fixed it, and car was fine until it went off lease at 95k

Now I have my first ever owned car, I would like to prevent the same issue occurring in my VRS, so is there anything I could be doing to reduce the soot build up and prevent any such problems?

I have seen various turbo cleaning kits, but unsure about them.

My VRS is currently 27 months old with 45k on with annual mileage around 25k from when I had it in January this year. I only use branded diesel, whereas in the superb I used all sorts.

Thanks

The CR engines tend to suffer from less gumming up of the turbo than the earlier PD engines so there is far less need to clean the turbo on these. Turbo vanes sticking, and turbo failure generally, on the CR is almost unheard of.

Was your Superb definitely a CR engine ? On a 59 plate it may well have been a PD.

Yes it was defo a CR, was built Oct 2009 delivered 5th Nov 2009

I guess it must have been the 170 bhp version then? The 140 bhp engine was PD until early 2010 in the Superb.

I think you were probably just incredibly unlucky with the turbo on the Superb. I can't recall a single case of turbo failure on a CR 170 Octavia VRS in the 4+ years I've been on this forum.

That's reassuring, I guess apart form regular oil changes there is no real need to clean yet? Perhaps when it gets a few more miles on I may run something through the fuel tank.

Thanks

In my experience the turbo cleaners you pour into the tank are not that much cop, i've not used one that has cured a sticky turbo vane problem !!. In my opinion (and thats all it is) If you do want to clean the turbo the best kit for it is the innotec kit - However, I have not heard of anyone with a CR need their turbo or egr need cleaning.

Personally I wouldn't clean the turbo at all unless there were obvious symptoms of sticking vanes. Turbo failure on the 2.0 CR is normally so rare as to be not worth worrying about.

great, so I can relax then re turbo.

Pondering taking out extended warranty, when warranty expires, I know dpf can be costly when they are full, are there any other costly repairs on CR's?

I've pondered taking out a warranty in the past but decided I'm better off putting money aside to pay for possible future repairs. Depends on your attitude to risk really. There aren't many potentially very expensive repairs on a manual boxed , front wheel drive Octavia.

If your thinking of taking out a warranty to cover the DPF be careful as many warranties consider the DPF to be a filter, ie a consumable part and therefore not covered. The DPF on a CR is only likely to need replacing at a very high mileage so unless you're intending keeping the car for many years it's probably not a problem you'll ever encounter.

Yes I plan on keeping it for as long as I can, at least another 3 years. The car policy at work is cars must be less than 5 yrs old with no more then 100 k on the clock.

I will be keeping this as long as possible until I am told to change!

Some non company car users have ran their cars for up to 8 yrs without any comeback, pocketing the car allowance, which is a nice addition to monthly salary.

At what mileage do dpfs get full and require replacement, I wonder?

Thanks

I can't recall anyone on here who's managed to fill the dpf on VRS CR yet, not bad considering it went into production in I think late 2008.

If I worked at your place I think I would get a private plate put on and keep the car as long as I liked! Mind you its easy enough to find the age of a car with an online reg search now so that tactic doesn't work as well as it used to.

That thought had crossed my mind, thought my mileage is submitted each month:(
