North/South divide in car pricing.

Featured Replies

I have been looking at various car websites at nearly new models and would appear to me, living in the South East that you get more car for your money if you live elsewhere eg: Up North?

Is this true? And if cars are cheaper elsewhere, is your trade in correspondingly lower?

Hah! You think that's bad try the added Cornwall tax down here. For reasons unknown most vehicles down here cost substantially more than elsewhere in the country...

Go up north and west. Ayrshire direction and towards Glasgow where the land is tipping to the left under the weight of used cars. Much cheapness can be got anywhere tho. You are only buying one car. For prestige cars handed back at the end of lease. Look to Aberdeen. But remember asking prices are not what you need to offer. Chance your luck.

I think it's more a rural/urban divide than north/south as such. I always used to travel from this area to West Yorkshire to buy cars as you got noticeably more for your money.

I'd have said the opposite, I know plenty of people that head south to buy cars because they think the deals are better. Workmate went to Bournemouth to pick up an R32 and Leeds way for a  Disco 3.

A few car supermarkets in an area might drive prices down.

I'm not sure about mainland uk regions, they seem the same, but what I can tell you as fact is if it costs you guys a grand, the vultures over here want at least a grand more.

Serious: 09 octavia. Same model, same miles. England 5000 n.i 7500...

The perception I hav of cheaper car prices furtjer north maybe all to do with cost of living, house prices etc......

Lots of cheap car supermarkets popping up down south. I know someone who's just bought a 14 plate Fiat 500 for somewhere around £7k!

I would say living in the SE you get the biggest choice available. For example, High Wycombe tends to have a bigger for sale pages in the free papaer than the SW Echo does for all of Cardiff/Mid Glamorgan.

The choice in south wales is worse and more expensive than if I drive across the bridge into england. Saying that, at the time of buying my octavia it was actually the cheapest on autotrader for the miles/spec, so there's good deals anywhere.

You know the answer.   Use the internet and telephone to negotiate the best deal.   Most dealers will honour another's part exchange valuation providing you are honest about any scratches, dents or damage to alloys and back your description up with emailed photos of your car.

We live in Reading - for the two SEAT's ion our family, we bought from Pentagon in Nottingham and my Skoda Rapid came from Colbornes of Guildford (part of Lookers).
