MDs/Changers/MP3 decision to make!

Featured Replies

Ive been looking around the forum trying to decide what way to go in expanding the standard symphony HU thats fitted. Ive been looking at various cd/mp3 changers plus also minidisc as i have loads of them lying around. But with the rise in the use of mp3 players, why is there no hard drive or memory based system for the car? I remember one or two around a few years ago but i cant find anything on the net.

Yes i could get a MP3 compatible HU for very little money but i'm still left with fumbling around to change a cd. The CD-MP3 and Mini Disc changers are alot of money which both allow allot of songs on a single disc. The MD changer is prefered as I alread have a portable MD player and dont want to use another media for the car, which is why just a MP3 system would have been great. Has anybody fitted a MD changer? How good are the interface units you can get to plug into a standard HU? Anyone used these people before..here

Its a lot of money so wanted to just get peoples opinions on it.

MP3 is the way to go, have the Audience system myself with 6 MP3 CD's online at any one time, which is more than enough. But pity navigation is crap. Like my old Alpine 9812 Single Disc MP3 Palyer for navigation and song display over the audience but with maxidot and steering wheel controls plus all integrated the Audience just shades it.

Thats neat, I didn't know you could get that in the new Octy. Really nice, but I don't think you're fitting that lot into a Fabia somehow.

MP3 is totally the way to go. Best headunit has to be the Empeg.

Mine has a single 40GB disk (2.5" laptop drive), and if I run out of space, I can add another of any size I like. It is removable, and you can hook it up at home since it has RCAs on the back. It runs Linux internally, it has networking for zipping your music over. There are loads of applications for it, from Pacman to Song Lyrics scrolling across the screen with a bouncy ball.

There are some downsides. 1) You can't buy them new, they only made about 4000. But they are on eBay pretty much one a month or so. 2) No amp included. The sled only has line level outputs. 3) No tuner as standard, but many come with an external one. I have one in my car.

If you want to know more see RioCar.org or my install on the Empeg BBS.

Very impressed with the Empeg. Looks very professional. Maplin do something very similar minus 3.5" HDD for about

I opted for an mstation HDD Mp3 player I picked up 2nd hand on Ebay including an amp and HQ cables for
