Steering Light On Dashboard

Featured Replies

Hi Folks

Fabia TDI Elegance Y Reg.

I know there are plenty of threads of steering lights, I've had this issue myself.  So I've done the following:

-Replaced alternator (90A (original was 70A) used from a breakers

-Replaced battery with good quality high amperage

-Checked DMF wire is in tact (battery light comes on the dash)

-Scanned car for fault codes with VCDS light - No errors.

Symptoms = Steering light on dash as soon as start the vehicle.  Steering is heavy until revs rise and moving.  Drives fine until parking again when crawling in 1st/reverse where it becomes heavy.

One concern is with the used alternator which is sticking out 15V when the engines on.  I'm sure my Fabia VRS sticks out about 14/14.5.  However the previous alternator was sticking out 16.5V and killed the battery.

Basically, I'm out of ideas.  Had a mechanic look at the rack, slight leak but nothing major.  Steering angle sensor isn't throwing up any codes and does feel OK when the car is in motion.

Anyone got any pointers on this?

Thanks in advance

The regulator on the Alternator may be faulty? thats the problem with buying an alternator from a breakers, you dont know its condition when the car was scrapped.

If it was the Pump id expect it to do it all the time, likewise the sensor.

its a weird one, good luck with it.

Yeah I'm thinking that...

Going to swap the alternator out (problem was the first one had a bad regulator) so will get a recon alternator.  Least it'll be guaranteed.

Measuring blocks suggest sensor may be an issue but I need a second opinion.

Pump has previously been replaced and seems OK.

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Will post an update once solved for those looking in the future.

Just to update anyone who is reading this experiencing similar issues.

The culprit was the angle sensor.  A fault code wasn't logged at first but was eventually and a replacement (newer type sensor) solved the issues.
