Torque & ODBII Diagnostics

Featured Replies

Hi all

I recently forked out the princely sum of £2.97 for a Bluetooth ELM327 ODBII dongle.  Took a few weeks to arrive from China but it's the best 3 quid I ever spent!

I've paired it with the android Torque Pro app and I love the graphic displays for various different readouts.

There is also an ECU fault reader which I can imagine will be immensely useful if I ever get a fault light.  It also performs a live test - the results of which are below:

End of report.

2 things in the test are concerning me.

1)  Firstly, the EVAP monitor - Test Incomplete of dependent test failed - is this an emissions test failure right there? Any Torque users know if this needs configuring in Torque beforehand or does the sensor just not exist (or is it on VW's proprietary protocol and therefore can't be read?).

2)  I have a reported misfire on cylinder 3.  An average of 1 misfire on each 10 drive cycles.  I'm assuming there are 2 sensors per cylinder but only 1 of the sensors is recording the misfire.  I've re-run the test numerous times and it's always logged as a count of 1 no matter what the driving style is (idle / urban / throttling the arse out of it) so I'm wondering if it's anything to be concerned about?  I would have thought that if it was a random misfire it wouldn't always be recorded?  Additionally, the test still reads as 'PASS' so the system must be seeing it as a random misfire?

i cant help much with the first one but regarding the misfire fault, thetest MID:$a4 TID:$0b looks like and average figure to me so the car is averaging how many misfires the car has had over the last 10 drive cycles. the max figure this can be is 65,535 and the fact you only have 1 doesn't concern me very much. i think if it got a lot worse then it might be worth putting some new spark plugs, ht leads and coil pack in (providing yours is a petrol engine) however 1 every 10 drive cycles isn't a particularly huge figure to me.

Thanks Andy.  I'm having it serviced next month so they should be able to resolve it for me (I'll be a little suspicious of their abilities if it's still registering a misfire after the service!!).  What I couldn't get my head round is that it was always a constant 1 in every 10 each time I ran the test.  I would have expected some tests to yield a count of zero.
