Volvo S40

Featured Replies

Afternoon all :)

Ive been looking at getting rid of my Octy FL VRS now for a wee while  and have had a look at a few motors over here in Dublin for about 6-8k (euro) and theres not much to be had, most are all high milers!! But there seems to be a good few Volvo's about most with moderate miles....whats the view from my learned friends on something like this:

http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volvo/S40/1.8-SE../57814044623001410/advert?channel=CARS

Nearly all the beamers and VAG  cars for sale are nowhere near this kind of quality and i have NO experiance at all with Volvo's!!

Any thoughts kindly appreciated :)

I think they're based on a shared platform with the MK2 Ford Focus.

I've had a couple of Volvos and they've always been brilliant especially with a big engine, however I've not had that particular version of the S40.  A colleague at work has the D5 version and loves it but it seems to have the same issue that the two I had have - good in a straight line, not so great on corners.

I'm looking at Volvo as well...

Been really tempted by the XC90.

Never had a big 4x4 before.

No offence but that would be a major downgrade? A 1.8se Volvo will feel like it's struggling to pull the skin off a rice pudding compared to a vRS. It's the T5 you want surely!? :-)

Indeed based on the shared focus platform. The electronics are a tad fragile though. My best mate ran a 2005 SE with the Volvo oncall system and quite a few other bits of kit and it took Volvo 4 attempts to locate the problems with battery drain. It was never right though and in the end traded it. Was nice when it was running although the seats are not proper comfy Volvo seats.

I'm looking for a volvo too, I'm wanting a V70 D5.

My daily drive is a 2003 S60 2 litre Turbo SE with only 73,000 miles.

The Leather Interior is as new, & the Build quality superior to almost any manufacturers car in the class & price range.

As a used car they can be amazing bargains, & not all drink too much fuel.

This one is £285 a year VED,

The almost identical 2004 Model, same engine but with official Emissions which are lower, yet the VED is £485 for it.

The one i have required a Replacement engine (Used Salvage, sound engine from Accident Damaged car 3 years ago

& then a New Automatic Gearbox which cost the Owner more than the value of the car.

(someone probably made a 'Servicing Error,

they will have Used the Wrong Grade of engine Oil & totally the Wrong ATM Fluid i would imagine,

because that was the common reason for early failures.)

So basically, check out Volvo Forums, and do Googles on Common or known faults.

Check out newer Volvos the Interiors & Build is Wonderful.  Real VFM IMO.

The Chairman and CEO of Volvo is the EX VW USA CEO.

(or was, not googled to see if he still is the Volvo CEO)

If buying a Volvo from the time of Ford being the Parent Company,  buyer beware,

But that is true of every used car.

If buying used,

even with full Service History, best budget to have a Full Service carried out by a Trusted Mechanic using the correct

parts & Fluids, that is if you want a Keeper & a Reliable car.

Cheers folks :)

I wasnt really looking for  just a volvo, its just that they seem to to be a wee bit cheaper and less miles with more service history than the other cars ive been looking at!!...really all i want is a nice motor with average miles with a good history for about 7K euro but there seems to be little out there in Ireland.

and I provide my wisdom to world free of charge as well

I doubt anyone would pay for it anyway ;)

Anyway how about a V50 estate  http://www.motorvation.ie/viewanad.php?ad_id=1082110&r=%26amp%3Br%3D

I just want a poxy car!!!

:)

I take bitcoins.

My folks looked at a V50 as a Motability car and were very impressed with it, very very keen but my Mum's disability meant she found it very hard to get in the car. The passenger entry was too low and too narrow for her.

Dad loved the seating position (and the seats) felt everything was high quality and the liked the design of the 'flying console'.

they have had Focus's since and they share the same 1.6d. again they really like that engine and find it plenty fast enough for them and very economical 60+ mpg isn't a problem.

I had a 2007 s40 20d sport se ..rubbish car,no storage drove horrid ,bad torque steer.really noisy. Poor remapping results from rica.based on ford focus with a French engine really noisy.scrubbed rear tyres like driving around with handbrake on.My wifes same year focus tdci lx is a miles better car too be honest with same engine.

The s40's arn't a bad car but there not a proper volvo or not the volvo of old anyway,

I think you will be very disappointed going from a VRS to a 1.8 as there noisy and gutless,

If you can find one it either has to be a T5 or a D5 as there best of the bunch or maybe a 1.6D Drive if your not to bothered about alot of go,
