Saab 93 or 95

Featured Replies

Evening all :) well my search continues for a second hand motor and my search has thrown up a few Saab's, question is what are they like and and which is a better car 93 or 95? On a 06/07 plate.

I know there's no main dealers anymore but surely servicing shouldn't be an issue.

As always I bow down to superior knowledge of briskies and your comments are greatly appreciated :)

Cheers

Kit

I was looking at the 9-5 before I got the Vectra.  They are in theory based on the same platform but it's well known that the Saab versions are a much better product.  They share all sorts of components but it appears that they also made enough changes to make the overall quality of the Saab better than the Vauxhall equivalent.

I didn't go for one in the end as they were just a bit too grown up for my liking.  I would always have felt like I was being my dad when driving it whereas the Vectra is way too chavvy for my dad to approve.  :notme:

I'm looking at the 08 95 estate on here

Not much difference between them,    just that the 95 is bigger than the 93.       SAAB's are cheap as chips lately.     They're coming back into production I believe.

My old 9000 was like a bloody tank.

Big and heavy! But the last of what I'd call the proper Saabs before they started sharing

production with GM/Vauxhall. Nowadays they are just a classier and posher Vectra

but no better made.

Just be aware they are very prone to seizing engines due to oil starvation. I think it related to the oil pump pickup, a part starts to break up.

Liked my dad's G reg 900 2 door as a child! Beautiful car!

Seems everything I look at folk point out negatives ;) of course that's why I post, for that kind of response but surely just one time everyone will go " ohh great motor go and buy" ;) anyone suggestions ?

Kit :)

I like the Saab's. I would have had 1 if I hadn't needed a bit more space. The 9-5 is pretty old tech but the 9-3 is pretty much a much nicer looking Vectra. The diesel engines are based on Fiat tech..and the 150bhp 1.9s have a few issues with swirl flaps and a couple of other issues. Great cars though!

Unfortunately you are going to get that with every car. Don't you think it's best people point out the major problems so you know what to look for when buying the car. My work had a 95 limo that we sold about 1 1/2 years ago and the engine seized on the new owner driving it home due to this engine problem. We still have a 2004 93 aero hatch with 17000 miles on it that is now kept in storage, because the boss wants to keep it for being a future classic. And it wasn't worth selling.

Meta... As said above that's the comments I'm looking for as I know shag all

About cars!! Meant that maybe I'd see a car and everyone would go great top motor... so my search would be over ;):) I just don't know enough about cars so hence posting on here for advice :)

I had a 93 with the 2.2 TiD lump, bought from a Saab specialist with 97000 on the clock and a FSH by one main dealer. Brilliant motor, never let me down, dead comfy and just the little bit different. Owners forum very good and quite a few specialists who know the car and charge reasonable rates about.

Sold it after two years and only lost £1500 in depreciation

Not all negative,   the bonus is a very decent 9-3 Aero can be had for less than a basic Vectra and much better built, Muchly.

I've had a 9-5 HOT Aero.  Brilliant car.  I will buy another one when the right one comes up.  I prefer the older, pre 'Dame edna' models.  And the stuff said about the performance of the HOT ones is true - they are very able indeed  B)

The comment about the engine's siezing relates to the crankcase ventilation system on the 2.3 four pots, breaking down internally and dropping bits of rubber into the oil.  You just need to look out for any nasty signs, and preferably see evidence of the sump being dropped (to clean out any muck) and if needed, that the vent system has been upgraded to version 6 or later.  Other weak points are pixels on the SID, and the orange headlight relay - both relatively minor in the grand scheme of things.

I'm still a member of UKSaabs - nice bunch of people.

Great motors - go buy one!

Well so far it's either a Saab 95 LPT 150 bhp BP linear estate for 6900 euro with 68000 miles on the clock or a 07 octy rs pd with 120000 miles on the clock for 7700 euro!!! The saab does look good though :)

How old is the 95?

At those prices and mileages I'd go for the saab no question!

Saab's a 08. Was thinking that myself :) the saab is on the website that I put up on my first post if anyone wants to have a look :)

I didn't realise the saab was a petrol, I'd probably still go for it, if you don't mind the mpg figures it's a bigger car and will probably be better equipped as most had heated rear seat etc. and they are just as well screwed together.

Cheers for the info mdon... There's now an 06 petrol octy rs estate with 68000 miles for 8k (euro) in the mix now!!! Why can't buying a car be easy?!!

I had a 93 from 1998 to 2010. It gave me 13 years of trouble free motoring. I was a bit concerned before I got it as I had come from the old 900 Turbo and 9000 Carlsson variants.

I think it's true to say with the late models, the body panels are not quite as thick as the old Saabs used to be, but still far better built than many other makes.

They also make cracking value for money. As for parts Saab GB now run the distribution network, so no problem there.

On the 93 (don't know what happens in the 95) I liked the way they carried over from the old models the ignition key next to the gearbox, locking it in reverse. If someone does nick it they will have to nick it in reverse, could be tricky!

All in all, good cars.
