engine management light after EGR blanked off

Featured Replies

hi guys

I know it is normal for the engine management light to come on after blanking the EGR but how much should it cost to get it mapped out without changing the current map that is in the car?

a local tuning company gave me a quote of £175 just to get the light off as he said it was just as much work as doing a full remap, does this seem normal?

and are there any benefits of getting a proper EGR delete fitted over just the blanking plates to exhaust?

sorry, I know there are a lot of questions but any help or opinions are appreciated

thanks

Ryan

Its 10 mins work for someone knowing what they are doing, just go around different places that offer mapping services with £50 in your pocket, cash in hand job for 10 mins of someone's time them knowing full well no additional parts needed, someone is bound to wanna take that £50 off your hands, in fact its so temping easy money that I would personally start my opening offer at £30 cash in hand, and would be fully willing to tell the guy that said £175 to go **** themselves, but the important think to understand here is that its quick and easy for them to do, so don't let them tell you how much it is, tell them how much you are willing to pay them for there 10 mins of service, and if they try blagging you into its not that simple BS, then wave them good buy with the easy money they could have earned and move on to the next garage that offers remapping.

Personally this is not a problem I faced with my EGR delete since it was already part of my map.

Depends who you go too. People who write the map or people who buy in the maps. Later will charge you full price I would have thought.

Where about you based?

Ah just checked and your a little far from me.

I personally can't write maps anyway, and I have a custom remap on my car done by Red Dot Racing in Warwickshire which includes an EGR delete, but I know it does not take someone with the right software and knowledge long to map out a warning light, so if I needed this doing then that is exactly what I would do, just go out one morning stop off at every localish garage on route that does remapping and offer them £30 cash in hand to take out that warning light, someone will do it, thats pretty much how I handle any job I want doing, I buy the parts and If I cant fit them myself I research how long it takes and how much work is involved, stop off at garages along route and offer them a price of what I am willing to pay for what I want doing, throwing details I have learned during my research about the work it involves so they know I am not joking when I say I know what work is involved.

An example of this currently I have found a place willing to fit my suspension, this work includes fitting all new bushes, dampers and springs (I am currently awaiting delivery of the Bilstein B12 kit), top mounts and ball joints, I have found a place willing to do this for £100, its a real good price and they Mechanic knows this, he wants me to bring it in cash in hand at 6pm next Friday evening after he closes, its straight up £100 to him in his pocket, for 2 to 3 hours work with my help, and that's good for us both, and since I  will be there hoping my mind is at ease knowing that all the new parts I have purchased will be fitted properly.

thanks for the reply guys

you may be right there, unfortunately there aren't an awful lot of garages that do mapping around me, I know jabba is only an hour away from me in Peterborough but I don't think they write their own maps.

I'll do a little searching around

depends on the model year  03-04 seems to be the "turning point" between edc 15--no light and edc16    why not just fit a gasket with a hole  and clean out the egr valve at the same time  it will help with warm up during winter I don't believe egr delete is a big deal unless you are going further with tuning---from someone with a longstanding egr "wingnut stealth mod"

My car is an 05 plate so the light came on almost instantly after blanking it off lol putting the egr pipe back on is not possible as I have the turbo from a golf but still a fabia intake manifold (engine swap) so they don't match up

What's the wingnut mod?

Their all edc15p ecu's.
