I'd be wary of running the car without gas in the system as the compressor may be damaged as a result of lack of lubrication.

From reading on here the system realises it has no gas left in so switches of the compressor

and my dealer was willing to give my car back without any gas, after fitting new compressor!

Thanks Mike I couldn't remember what it was called. I rang the local VAG specialist and they said £200 all in to change condenser and regass. I'm supplying condenser as I got it cheaper than they could. Is £200 a good price?

Had the condenser replaced. £170 labour inc regass and £82 for the part. Still doesn't seem very cold as some cars I have been in though?
