1.6 CR TDI egr cooler - a word of caution

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

I have just recently shelled out an arm and a leg for the replacement of the egr cooler on my Octavia estate 1.6 CR TDI, 2010 (2010) bought 1 year old from a main dealer. The replacement cost £940! The cooler is in an inaccessible place involving drive shaft removal - hence the cost. I did not have the extended warranty because I foolishly thought Skoda cars were reliable. The cooler went porous, leaking coolant into the exhaust and inlet manifold after only four years! The engine stopped functioning with no warning. Hire cars to enable my disabled wife to have transport have added greatly to the cost. Since the repair at the dealer it is flashing its coil light at me and the engine management light has come on permanently. Obviously it will have to go back for further work and I was told it will have to be connected to the diagnostic device at a cost of £45 +VAT, even before any remedial work is added to the overall cost.Probably sensors have been damaged by the coolant and heaven knows what it will have done to the DPF!

Extended warranty is not an optional extra!!!!

Did you not contact skoda uk for help ! Full service history in dealers or corner muppets? It's just out of warranty , skoda might , probably have helped financially, you should have taken the extended warranty when you got it !

Did contact Skoda UK. Had used an independent garage for service because it was logistically very problematic to get it serviced at the main dealer. Because it was second hand, the extended warranty was conditional on service by a Skoda dealer or Skoda approved garage. As a result Skoda UK did not offer any goodwill help with the cost. As I said in the original post, I foolishly thought Skoda cars would go for more than 55k and 4 years before major breakdown. I was wrong. They are as fallible as any other make on the road. Thanks for remaking the point I made about the warranty!
