Rear wiper stays on

Featured Replies

And it wasn't even switched on! I've been through replacing the rear wiper motor after it was ceased and beyond repair. All was good for a few weeks and today the hose popped off when I went for a wash/wipe. Turned it off, then it just started by itself and cant stop it now, don't know if the water did something to the electrics? I would have thought it would have stopped working completely if that's the case. Could it be the relay?

Any help greatly appreciated

Did you replace with a new motor asm??

If not chances are you have same problem as before . Not uncommon for second hand motor asm to play up . I have been through 3.

They can turn on by themselves as the connection are fried from water ingress and the stop position is lost.

replace it buddy

May also be the actual Wiper stalk on steering column

I can send you a blanking bung if you have had enough of it. I put a bung in after 3 motors.

Cheers guys, the bung is really tempting! I'll give it some thought. It was a used motor but in very good condition. Not sure about wiper stalk as everything else is fine, been through all different positions and seems ok. Wash jets still work on rear. Don't know whether to try the relay before I give up and bung it. Not sure I can be bothered with a new motor, but I do like having a rear wiper hhmmmm a quandry.

when you say used motor in very good condition, how do you know? Did you strip it down and check internals?

Just because it looks good on the outside means nothing buddy. The internals get water ingress caused by the centre shaft rusting through and the water gets sprayed all around the inside when using the rear wash. This is a stupid design making water get inside and all over the cog's and electrics. So you can get all of a sudden the rear wiper to go on it's own as the electric in the rear motor all of a sudden come back to life. This is very common issue and why you can't expect second hand ones to last that long (unless you are lucky)

I bunged mine up after 2nd failure but miss the wiper way too much to not have one so been on the 3rd second hand one for about a year now. (probably fail now i mentioned that lol)

the wiper stalk can go wrong and only in back position  for rear wiper but I put money on your rear wiper asm playing up. There is a guide to strip it down and clean it out but as mentioned false economy as when that centre shaft is rusted you can't fix it.

Yeah when I got it I split it open to load it with more grease and lube before fitting and it was all good as far as the moving parts were concerned. Looks like it had been dry in there. Having seen the state inside of the one I took off I wanted to try and safeguard it as much as possible before fitting. I'm no sparky though so I didn't go beyond the moving parts. I think the water must have got in there when the hose popped off as I used the jets.

I'll probably replace, now I've had one I like it and it bugs on cars when things and functions don't work or get blocked off. But then buying 2 motors a year doesn't sound like much fun either!

It was indeed the motor. Sourced another used one and just fitted it, seems ok but will be using the wash bare minimum. Just see how long this one lasts, although there does seem to be a steady stream of them on e bay for just over 30 notes, thankfully! Cheers guys

just unplug the screen wash for rear wiper in engine bay - quick simple fix

Nah as all that does is make the wiper smear crud across the rear screen....

Hmm. Here's my 2 penneth worth...

When I bought my Octy VRs 4 years ago, the rear wiper motor JUST worked...it was sloooow! And sometimes stopped altogether halfway across the glass.

So I stripped it down, it had the usual water ingress problem.

I cleaned it all out, packed it with new grease and re-fitted it. Now it works whizzy!

However, not wanting to re-create the problem, I banned myself from using the wash facility. I can't say that in the 4 years since, I have missed having the wash facility? The glass never gets SO dirty that I can't see out of it, and when it rains I just use the wiper, and the rainwater combined does a perfect job of clearing the view.

And hence, without using the wash, the motor still works as well as it did once fixed, 4 years on....

You really don't need the squirt!

  • 3 weeks later...

Could someone care to share the strip down guide?
