Noisy diesel rattle

Featured Replies

Today the engine was rather noisy in low rews / low speed / standing, almost to a point of feeling me embarrased like I was driving some very old diesel car. You know what diesel rattle I am talking about.

I havent experienced this before. Nothing has changed, I am even driving on the same tank of fuel, its standard summer warm outside, neither I push the car at all, just driving it gently through town.

My car is 2.0 150 DSG rather new, just a few hundred miles on the clock.

Perhaps it's doing a regeneration of the DPF?

If you don't push the engine much, and you mostly do short journeys it could be that simple.

I've never experienced it personally but there seem to be plenty of others who have.

Should it be louder diesel engine rattle when in regen?

Have you checked the oil level? Consumption can be high in the first few hundred miles.

When a regen occurs you will notice car is at 1000 rpm at idle versus 750 - 800 rpm - this increase in engine speed, and thus noise is what is being referred too.

The timing of the engine is also altered during a regen so they can sound a bit noisier.

We had an Ibiza 1.6 CR for a few weeks and I noticed a regen a couple of times. The engine did sound very noisy!

Is this the written rule? When rpm is on 1k in idle the regen is always on? Or there could be other reasons why rpm in idle can be on 1k but no regen?

Can also idle at higher rpm when high no of services are running ie. air con, heated screen etc. use the CAR >> Vehicle Status >> Stop/Start screen in the infotainment to give details of what is going on.

Just my opinion but the 150 ps engine is a little noisier than the 184 ps engine at low idle, but these are on different VAG cars so may be due to soundproofing etc between the different brands.

Is it also like the 1.6 I drove where the idle would increase to 1k rpm as you engaged gear as an anti stall and help in setting off?

But generally speaking it is a sign it's doing a regen. The engine is definitely noisier too.

The one thing that disappoints about my vRS TDi... engine clatters and doesn't sound very 'refined' - even when up to temp. Not quite as bad as the Massey Ferguson tractor otherwise known as a Kia Sportage CRDi that I just got shot of, and better than any Merc diesel I've heard, but not what I expected of a VAG car, and noisier than I remember the vRS I test drove sounding.

Same with my VRS. But it was after I had what felt like a misfire, running on 3-cylinders while in France just after I pick it up. Ever since, when cold, it sounds like its pinking which as its Diesel it isn't.

Dealer checked codes etc and found nothing wrong, so no idea.

They do sound pretty terrible when started from cold and left to idle; mine often exhibits a very mild ancillary squeaking/chatter. Becomes noticeably smoother once warmed through however. My 2013 Mk2 vRS did something similar.

Mines also getting more rattly as the miles rise, just hit 27k this week. Seems to have also developed a metallic clunk when going over speed bumps, might be a loose exhaust heat shield or hopefully the suspension is about to fall off so I can get a new set of springs fitted under warranty cos the ride is getting harsher, my 4yr old 90k Berb drove better than this car does, and No 1 son threw up all over the back seats yesterday so roll on Superb Mk III
