Comparison question

Featured Replies

I'm planning on buying a new Fabia but have a few questions before I decide properly.

What is the basic difference between the 1.2 12v 60 S and the 1.2 TSI SE as far as engine technology.  I'm no expert but just looking through the specs the accelleration is better on the TSI and there are 3 vs 4 valves, the 1.2 TSI would seem to be the better car in terms of acceleration and torque.  If the price of each was similar what would be the best buy?  My local dealer has a deal on both and the prices are not very different give or take.

Also I have no idea whether one is better than the other in terms of reliability and lonvegity.

Thanks.

The three cylinder is characterful and bullet proof while the tsi is smooth and lovely and torquey but is more complex. Both are good engines. Drive them both and see which you prefer.

The 12v 3 cylinder is turbo-less, whereas the 4 cylinder tsi has a turbo and so produces more torque and power.

Which 1.2 tsi are you looking at. The 85 or the 105hp.

For 'turbo-less' read gutless, the TSI is faster, smoother and more economical so if there's not much in it price wise then it's a no brainer really.

The 12v engine has been around longer and is almost bullet proof but the TSI is a better engine all round with no problems reported up to now.

Had both now have the TSI in my opinion there is no comparison the TSI is better in every way!

Both engines are built by Skoda, the 12v as stated above is the older design dating back to late 2002 but just about bomb proof, although it lacks any real performance.

The 1.2TSI first appeared in late 2009 and is 8v not 16 as many suggest. There is a newer 16v version but currently only fitted to the Octy III. Some early versions did suffer from cam chain rattle, turbo induced warning lights and HT lead issues but these have all been dealt with by updates; engines built from mid November 2012 will have all these in place.

Personal point of view but I find the TSI 86 works best in the Fabia if you have a manual box, the 105 doesn't suit the 5 speed box as well, so is better with the DSG. If you want a 105 with a manual maybe look at a Rapid or Spaceback, as at least you get an improved six speed box.

Oh if buying new I'd go for the TSI and if you plan on keeping it add the 5 year factory warranty extension before registration.

Its more of a price thing now i think.

The 60/70hp 12v 1.2 is the cheaper engine. Its not bad. I like mine. Its good for what it is, but it depends on your driving style and distance as to if the TSI is more suitable.

Iv drivin the TSI and own a 70hp 12v. However i havent driven the 60hp 12v. So i cant comment on that.

Is the 60hp still a tsi or are you in about a HTP? I'm particularly dopey this evening

The 60hp and 70hp engines are both HTP mate.

There used to be a 6 valve (50 then later 55hp) and 12valve (60 then later 65hp) variants, but with the latest version, they did away with the 6 valve and made both power outputs 12valve. I think its just an ecu map which separates the 60 and 70hp now.

The 60hp is not the TSI, it's the 3 pot, 12 valve 1.2 HTP.

Sorry my bad! The HTP is a solid engine if a tad loud! For me if I was to go for a newer Fabia it would be a 1.2 TSI with a bit more power!

The 60PS used to be a development of the old 6v 54PS in the Fabia I but became a detuned 12v when they launched the Fabia II FL in summer 2010; believe emissions killed off the 6v design.

Have owned Fabia's with the 54, 64 and 70PS HTP engines and found them all to be very willing motors but obviously not designed with out and out performance in mind.

The 54 is lovely with a full load and a steep hill

Well I do some private engineering work and have had a 2 stack toolbox fully loaded, engine crane with chains, ramps jacks and axle stands all loaded in the car and it really struggled climbing hills lol

Wonder it made it at all with that lot :o

I recall a lot of 2nd and 3rd gear action!

Thanks for the helpful replies, puts things into perspective a bit.  Will deffo test drive both before final decision.

The TSI I am looking at is the 1.2 86.  From what people have said this is probably the favourite.

I'd say my driving style is steady as she goes but like a wee bit of power when needed.  Do mostly A road driving 30 mile round trips with a few 200 mile round trips per month.

I'm hoping with the new Fabia due early next year I might get myself a good deal on the current model.

Cheers

You wouldnt have any problems with a 12v 70hp fabia for that, although the tsi might deliver a tad more power and refinement.

My 1.2 htp gives 50mpg on a run, third gear overtakes arent as bad as youd think, and 70mph in fifth is only 2500rpm. So its happy between 70-80mph all day long.

However, I'm not sure why, but the latest HTP (post 2010) isnt as responsive as the earlier HTP's and the TSI's. If im quick, i can press my foot to the floor and let it off again, and the revs will only just start to rise.

Well have driven both versions and must admit they feel they different beasts altogether, much prefer the 1.2 TSI 86HP much more power at all speeds and good burst of speed when needed and think this is the one for me.

Before final decisionmaking what are the top problems with this car?  Is it an oil drinker or am I getting confused with another turbo version?

Drive the deal has it for around 10,6k and local dealer offering 11k so is that reasonable for the convenience?  14 plate.

Thanks.

You're getting confused with the 1.4 tsi out of the VRS that has a turbo and a supercharger, and has been known to have oil consumption issues.

The 1.2 tsi does have a turbo, but doesnt have any oil consumption issues.
