Coil packs tick when unplugged?

Featured Replies

I think i've just had a coil pack go - suddenly stuttered, loss of power, flashing CEL and vagcom indicating misfire on cyl 3. Sounds like its running on 3 now and very rough.

My question is, should a healthy coil pack make a clicking sound when pulled from the spark plug? With the engine idling I pulled no 2 coil pack and it starting clicking. No 3 does 't do this - I'm hoping that indicates the coil pack is buggered (or i suppose the wiring to it)?

Im curious as i put new spark plugs in at the weekend (PFR6Qs replaced with the same) so my initial thought was that if was a dud plug.... Or something...

Cheers

If you phone your local main agent, your car may be subject to the coil recall, which means you may get 4 new ones for free.

Cheers, ill give them a go in the morning

The clicking noise you hear is the spark jumping from the coil to the plug. If no.3 is firing a spark, it won't make a noise.

4 shiny new coil packs fitted this morning, free of charge. Car no longer sounds or feels like a bag of bolts. Cheers all!
