Tinting lights is illegal?

Featured Replies

Is it?

Picked myself up some Halfrauds tint spray. ;) Was going to do the inside as per others, but noticed on the tin "only use on outside" also rather confuzzled by a statement saying "for show and race use only"

There was also mentions of using more powerful bulbs in the back, despite assurances it went translucent when lights shone through. Is this just modern "covering my a55" legal jargon, or stuff really worrying....

Gonna be having a go with the tint spray on Saturday so would like to know. inside/outside/better bulbs? Or my preferred option "don't give a f*** - just do it"

just do it, work out how to get it off if it goes wrong later :)

Might it be wise to wait until your car has been 'tested'

Good point, but I really wanted to do while I was fitting new back lights anyway - mate put a boat outboard prop through one of other ones, so ordered a new pair. ;) Sod it, I'll tint them anyway. The bugger is having to fit my old plates for the test - I've already had the new ones written up. :o

If the fuzz wants to be funny then yes they can do you for it. I had mine down for awhile and I had no problem, but I generally dont act/drive like a plonker.

It doesn't always look that great and the finish can dull and mark fairly easy. have a word with JUT before you have a go as he has done it a few times in th past and he's got a good finnish.

As for removing it, there is a fuild which you can use but I cant remember off the top of my head what it is, but it smells very strong and makes you very high!!

:eek: :thumbup::rofl:

I was buzzing for hours!! Which SWSBO found very funny!

Beware with tinting lights - I have seen a few 'local undesirables' doing this to their cars and it can make the lights extremely difficult to see. In one case the owner of the car (a baseball cap wearing :shakecan: in a white Fiat Punto) painted the rear light clusters with white emulsion - not only did it look horrible it totally obscured the brake lights - nearly had a heart attack braking to avoid this tw@ :finger: :grumpy:

However, if the light tinting is done professionally and not in a DIY sense, then all should be well :)

I've got a spare set of the old style fabia lights if it all goes t!ts up

I did mine with Halfrauds tint spray, and it was fine, lighter than the new Corsa 'tinted lights' option...

Unless you go ott, you'l be fine, think I've a photo somewhere...

:)

Well, it says one can is good for 2 lights. How much of the stuff do they expect me to use!?

Why dont u just put some strong window film on them? Or is it the rears you're talkin about?

Yeah, rear lights. Wouldn't mind perhaps just tinting the white areas, but decided a more general tint would be OK. I want to really use regular lights to vainly attempt to maintain the sleeper look at the back, even if the front looks like its gonna swallow you up in the rearview mirror. ;)

The reason for it technically being illegal is your bulbs are rated at 21w or 5w. The light is approved as it is from factory to emit that light from the bulb. Adding tinting to the light changes the E mark on the light so therefore it isnt legal anymore.

Its illegal and also immoral (you would look a ****) imo. Did the same to my 1st car (clio) and used the blue tint(yes...I too looked a ****). To get it looking half decent (if thats possible!) you will need to spray laquer over the top of the tint to give it the gloss finish. You may also need to buy some reflective tape as the reflectors in your lights will no longer work. Did this to mine and it passed the mot (failed without).....still looked a **** tho.:)

:Dnjnjn.jpg i like mine!

Tinting lights is it legal? - no its just IMMORAL!!!

:wavey: hullo! :D I'm still not 100% sure - going to see what happens tomorra. ;)

Well, I tinted the top orange section of the tail lights on two of my Corrado's and it looked great! They also both passed their MOT's.

1 can will be ample to give both lights 4-5 thin coats each. You don't want to do any more than that anyway as it will fail it's MOT. It will also look chavtastic if too dark. Cotton wool and nail varnish remover takes the tint off in seconds.

To get a factory finish, you'll need at least 2 coats of laquer, otherwise it will be dull.

Go for it! HTH.

Its made in Columbia and imported via Miami and Tilbury Docks !!:o

as far as legality goes i think they are fine as long as you dont spray the reflectors, buying new ones is an option but they look **** stuck to the car, some lexus style lights also have this problem.

in my opinion tinted lights are ok as long as its not a total black out, if done lightly can look ok.

I thought lights were to show your direction of intended turn, you were stopping or that you were "there". How foolish of me to think otherwise.
