VAG 1.9PD tdi cambelt change (in a Polo, sorry!)

Featured Replies

Good afternoon all,

I was pointed in the direction of this site from another car forum, I was advised that you are a friendly bunch of knowledgeable chaps  ;)

I have a 56 plate VW Polo with the 100bhp 1.9PD tdi diesel engine, I believe that this is the same engine available (in various states of tune) to mark I Fabia and many other cars from the VAG stable.

I would like to have a go at changing the cambelt, waterpump and associated tensioners etc, I am hoping that someone on here could point me in the direction of an "idiots guide". If this is only available in the "Freedom" section then I am happy to pay for membership.

I've been searching on this and many other forums, but I'm not sure if the guides I've found will relate to my particular car (can't find anything cambelt specific to the Polo with the 1.9PD tdi lump). I would be very grateful for any help.

I am planning on purchasing one of these timing lock tool sets to make things easier:

I'm reasonably competent with the spanners, but I don't really want to attempt this job without a guide of some sorts; this could be an expensive mistake if I don't have something to follow.

Many thanks in advance for any help or advice!

there will be a identifcation sticker somewhere in the car, the Fabia has it in the boot under the mat, but it will say the engine code.

for example early Mk1 Fabia VRS's had the engine code ASZ then it went to BLT (If i recall correctly)

it maybe easier for identifcation of the bits you need if you know the engine code. I dont think there are really any differences between any of the 1.9 TDI PD engines but may help.

Have you had a look at this guide?

I know it's for a vRS but it might help a little

Just pulled the boot mat up and there is a sticker there as you said. The engine code is AXR

Thanks for the link, thats a great guide. Do you know if it is exactly the same procedure for the engine in my car? The only reason I ask is that if I start taking mine to pieces and something turns out to be significantly different, I'll have to put it all back together again as I don't want to risk "guessing" or breaking something

Cheers

I haven't a clue tbh but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be able to advise you :)

There is no significant difference because the Fabia is a 9N Polo under the skin, which means the procedure is the same and those instructions will work just fine. Parts are also the same, I recommend Gates belt kits and any water pump you like if you're not using genuine parts.

Thanks for all the replies, very helpful!

I've ordered one of these kits, so should have the "specialist" tools required for this job once they arrive:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321482980033?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I note that Gates timing belt kits are recommended; could anyone point me in the direction of a decent source, ideally for the waterpump as well? Eurocarparts and the like don't appear to stock them, they only have other brands. Does anyone know the part number for the required kit? I've tried looking on the Gates website but can't make head nor tail of it......

Again, thank you all for your help :)
