What resistors for SAI removal?

Featured Replies

I'm removing the secondary air pump tomorrow and I have guide on how to do this, however, what resistors do I need to buy and where can I get them from? I really don't have a clue on this one.

Thanks guys

I used 10watt 470ohms from maplins 86p each.

Brilliant. Thank you. Did you get an Engine management light up at all?

Yeah. You will need to have it mapped out to avoid the EML coming on

It seems that the resistors seem less likely to work these days and most folks get the engine light on. This does not effect performance and you should still connect resistors and just get mapped out at a later date.

FYI today I just unplugged the connector going to the SAI pump and whacked in a resistor because I was getting fed up with it running like a bag of bolts until the pump shut off - will do a proper delete at some point. I used a 330ohm 10W resistor which is what seemed to be recommended elsewhere... no CEL yet, but obviously early days

used this resistor http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WELWYN-WH5-330R-JI-RESISTOR-10W-5-330R-/271177871615?ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160

My mate has a scanner which reads and deletes codes, will that be what I'm needed to get rid of the code and light if it comes up ofcourse?

If the resistor is used to fool the ECU into thinking the SAI is still there, and the engine management light still comes on, what is the point in putting the resistor in?

Yes . but if it comes on you will be clearing it often[emoji4]

Because the 330ohm 10w resistors do sometimes work and also you should have a connection to complete the circuit as even if no sai connected the ECU needs a circuit else it will go into limp mode.

The sai pump is part of an emissions system, if you unplug the pump the rest of that system is going to wonder whats gone on and throw a EML.

Without the SAI functioning at all the car will go into limp mode with the engine light, the resistor stops that happening as it fools the car into believing the SAI pump is still running. The CEL comes on in the second scenario because the ECU will log a insufficient flow fault, or a running to lean/rich code, neither of these put the car into limp home mode. So, you'll get a CEL with a resistor but for different reasons.

Mapping it out removes the ECU check on the emissions, so no CEL but you'll still need the resistor.

Wicked. Fully understand now. Thanks guys :-)
