Amundsen Sat Nav Postcode errors

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I recently got a Skoda Octavia Elegance with an Amundsen sat nav. In the 4 weeks or so I've had it I have twice had it route me to incorrect locations based on postcode.I verified the postcodes were correct and Google Maps routes correctly when I use these postcodes. I logged a question with Skoda on the web and had a chat with customer service. They say, there is no way of correcting this information, they are in the hands of their content supplier. As an example BS4 1UP routed to Bristol Airport when it is actually over 5 miles away.

Has anyone else had issues? If its only a couple of errors it's not so bad, but I am at about a 10% error rate at the moment which is not acceptable IMO

That's interesting... I thought the map data was provided by Nokia, but putting that postcode into here.com doesn't show Bristol Airport, but does show the same location as Google Maps.

So either Nokia aren't providing the postcode data, and/or the map data, or else the unit is doing something wrong.  There's usually a note in the manual or on an 'about' screen to show where map data comes from - anyone found this yet?

I have entered that postcode into my Amundsen & it certainly doesn't direct me to Bristol Airport. When I searched Google maps it gives the same location as my sat nav, however the last main road on the journey is the A4174 & that has the road name "Airport Road". It's some distance from the airport & not a direct route to the airport. Are you confusing the road name believing it to be at or near the airport?

If it still directs you exactly to the airport I would suggest the sat nav data is corrupt & if that's the case maybe a trip to the dealer is required.

Navteq supply the maps.

Hi Kalpat,

thanks for checking. I thought it must be a corruption so I was just rechecking before going t see the dealer and I have found out what is causing this. If I input the postcode direct it works fine, but I was using contacts and this doesn't work. The postcode is exactly the same, it is in the postcode field in my contacts but it routes to Bristol airport. I will have a play and see if spaces make the difference (currently the contact says BS4 1UP) and also try with no other road names tec, ie to see if I can work out if its a formatting issue. If you get a mo I would be interested to see if you can replicate routing from a contact with the rouge postcode. By the way, most of my contacts work fine, so there something a bit screwy with this one.

[Edit] the space doesn't make a difference. I tried deleting all but the postcode but then the sat nav say check address, WTF? Anyway, I think this is a bug, or at the least some bizarre formatting rule I don't know about. I'll have a play to see if I can get a contact with this postcode to route correct...

Does it use the postcode when navigating using contacts, or does it use the address??

I'm pretty sure it uses Post code as the road name is correct in the address and so if it used that I wouldn't end up at Bristol airport! I am in the process of setting up multiple contacts with different configurations fo the address and I'll try one without postcode for completeness.

O.k. experiment done and I think I understand what's going on. In my address I had the street as  "South Bristol Business Park,Roman Farm Road". If you remove the South Bristol Business Park bit, it works fine. The default action of the sat nav if it doesn't recognise the input format is to go to the centre of the nearest town, in this case 'Bristol Airport' (yes there is a town called that in the sat nav). I had one other address that didn't work. Its 19 Peel Close, Woodley, RG54SR. In this case the sat nav doesn't recognise a street called Peel Close in Woodley and so routes to the centre of Woodley instead.

Lesson is, if you route from a contact check where it's taking you as it might not be to the location of the postcode!

Navteq are Nokia - they don't really exist any longer as all Nokia's mapping is now branded as 'here'.

Yep, noticed that LOL!

I'd be interested to know if you have had further problems as I have had two bizarre occurrences with the satnav in my Octavia Elegance. The first was in Bristol where, having input an address and chosen a route, I stopped the car for a time. When I resumed my journey the satnav apparently picked up the planned journey, until I realised I was leaving the city of Bristol rather than travelling within it. I then found the satnav was trying to take me to Bristol Airport. I had to re-enter the address I was going to to get back on route. At the time (May 2015) I thought it some sort of aberration but last weekend it happened again. I was travelling to an address to the east of Norwich and, again, broke my journey. On restarting, the satnav asked if I wanted to resume directions to which I said yes. It then carried on taking me towards Norwich but when we got to the ring-road it wanted me to go west, rather than east. I checked the route and this time it was trying to take me to Norwich Airport. What was more worrying was that when I picked up the address from my contacts list (which it had happily accepted before) it still wanted to go to the airport. I had to completely re-enter the address to get it to accept it correctly. So, my question is, what is this satnav's obsession with airports? My theory is that it is trying to find the quickest way to get back to Wolfsburg!

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm hoping that when I upgrade the data under Skoda's three-year deal it might be corrected. Certainly, the current data is pretty out-of-date as, in Winchester in June, it tried to take me through a private car park and a pedestrianised, and closed off, street, which was a bit embarrassing.
