Turbo - Refurb or Hybrid?!

Featured Replies

As most of you will already know, my turbo went a few weeks back but not as catastrophically as it could have done, I managed to stop the car in time so the "only" issue is that the impellor has become loose and is making the most awful screeching sound even on idle!

So.........do I simply get it repaired or do I get someone to hybrid it for me? What costs are likely to be involved either way and who is best to use?

BTW, my car is a MK1 vRS Fabia, mapped to Shark Stage 1...

Thanks in advance,
Rob

Depends if it's the KKK turbo, I wouldn't bother getting it upgraded as they are not the best quality.

Try and find a PD130/150 Garrett turbo and get that hybridised. It's not cheap though, you have to think about all the other supporting mods to go along with the hybrid turbo such as FMIC, flywheel, clutch, mapping. If not then try and get a standard PD130 Garrett turbo and don't bother with original KKK rubbish.

Garret PD150 turbo.  Blank off the EGR outlet manifold. Retain everything else.  Probably the cheapest option longer term as most KKK's used with re-mapped engines seem to give up the ghost sooner or later if mapped much beyond 150BHP.

I agree with the above. The most efficient and cost effective way of keeping your car and adding a bit of reliability will be with a stock PD150 unit, you could even get your map tweaked for a few extra horses if you'd like at some point.

As a rough guide, when my turbo went on my old Fabia, I bought a new hybrid PD150, Forge FMIC, Magnex Decat, Blueflame Catback and had it all fitted and custom mapped at a rough cost of about £2.5k. Different car afterwards, but in hindsight a lot of cash for what a PD150 turbo and a map can come relatively close to in terms of figures.

before going hybrid i bought a new genuine pd150 turbo lasted 3 weeks!

Then there must've been a problem with the unit, or perhaps an underlying mechanical issue on your car or poor mapping. Maybe even all three. Plenty of people run stock PD150 units with circa 190bhp with no issues, just suggesting a cheaper route for the OP.

I paid £650 to get my pd150 hybridised.

I'd imagine the 130 should be a little cheaper?

I'm buying via XMAN750 on these forums.  Read good things about the Recon/hybrids he sells and hoping it'll perform as well as my KKK has for the past 100K.  Could be worth dropping him a line to enquire what he has/recommends?

If you ring AET turbos in mansfield mate they do an uprated garrett for a pd130 which they advise is ideal for a shark stage 1 remap think it has uprated bearings in or something like that. They are very reasonably priced too. Shark seem to work very closely with AET and have no problems offering warranties on shark mapped cars. Can't remember who the chap was I spoke to but might be worth a call.

Pd150 standard turbo would be my recommendation. If you want more then go down the gtb on cast manifold route from xman. Gtb's probably cheaper but requires downpipe cuting and welding.
