Latest advice on 5th gear over-run whine?

Recommended Posts

My '03 VRS, 81k has developed the 5th gear whine when off the throttle. Looking up other experiences it seems common but on those threads there seems to be little consensus as to the best fix. On the Felicia I know it is a simple case of tightening up a nut with the gearbox in situ - is there a similar fix for the Fabia? One user suggested they had found a solution involving shimming a loose bearing, but the trail seems to have gone cold on that - anyone had this done?

Keen to hear informed opinions about how much of an issue it is likely to be long term (if I always block-change 4-6), and whether it needs seeing to ASAP or not. Surely Skoda UK know what the issue is since it seems to come up quite a lot.

Many thanks,

Sam

This was the thread where it was suggested that there might be a <£150 fix involving shimming a bearing - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/307744-whining-5th-gear-vrs/

I'd be interested to know how long other people have been able to drive their VRS's for with this issue without running into expensive gearbox problems.

if it was me. if just change the gear oil and drive normaly with it. no need to block change ot anything. gearboxes sometimes develop an overrun whine.

if you get to worried . keep your eyes open for a good gearbox on ebay ot soemthing and keep it as a spare

personly opinion is that reconditioning gearboxes is a specialist work. the tolerances are so fine and you wont know you've done it right or messed it up until the box is back in. id rather spend extra couple of hundred quid for the piece of mind to know its going to be spot on. not worth the time to mess around for me. but I work long hours and don't have much free time
