Exhaust gas temp sensor - Is it urgent?

Featured Replies

Having completed 76K (95% on motorways) over the last 3 years,  I had a flashing glow plug light come on 2 weeks ago. I went on a holiday and the car did not move for 2 weeks. I now have a permanenlty lit engine management orange light and the flashing glow plug light. It has been diagnosed as a faulty temp sensor at the exhaust end. Been quoted £168+vat+£30 labour. Is it an immediate cause for concern or can it wait a few weeks? Are the quoted prices reasonable? Would the DPF or anything else be affected? The stop/start function no longer works. Passed it's first MOT yesterday.  Appreciate any feedback. Thanks

On diesels, DPF may get stuffed, and/or you may have fire coming out of exhaust pipe, I have seen it once on motorway in Germany, evidently the ECU was adding way too much fuel on post-injections, probably due to EGT reporting cold DPF.

On petrols (your sig says 1.2), it probably won't make much difference so long as you do not push the engine hard and lambda probe works. EGT sensor is a safeguard against too lean mixture mostly.
