Having trouble with Single DIN adapter wiring - black/white wire

Featured Replies

Hello,

I've bought to proper Skoda parts kit to fit my Alpine head unit into my Octavia but I'm having a bit of trouble working out the wiring.  There is a black/white cable that needs to go to the fusebox on the side of the dash.  This seems to be for the switched live.  I've managed to run the cable around to the fusebox but I'm not sure where and how to put it into the fusebox.

The instructions aren't fantastically well translated but they suggest putting it into "Signal 15" and then placing the supplied 10amp fuse in "in the stepped position"

Now assuming they mean position 15 in the fusebox then there is already a 7.5amp fuse in there.

Also, what do they mean by "stepped position"?

How do I get the cable into the back of the fusebox in order to fit the fuse?

I'm a bit stuck on this.  I've fitted plenty of stereos in the past but never had to mess about to this extent.

Can anyone help guide me please?

Cheers

Oh, and I've done a load of searching but not managed to find an answer on this

Right, bit of an update.

The black/white cable is definitely for the switched live for the head unit and I've figured out how to get it across to the fusebox.

I've also found a couple of positions in the fusebox that are switched lives but I can't seem to make the black/white cable connect up to the fuse.  I don't know if I am just not pushing it far enough into the back of the fusebox or what but I can't get it to go live once the ignition is switched on.

I'm getting a bit frustrated by this now as it's taking ages and the car is a forest of wiring.  In the posts I have found about switched lives people seem to suggest it is only a 10 minute job.  What am I doing wrong.

Surely someone out there can help?

You need to unlock the fuse box before you can push the wire in and then lock it again. It's a lot of faff and easier getting a pig back fuse holder.

Aha, so I was doing something wrong.

So, piggybacking, I take it just need to find another switched live and take it from there?

That's excellent, thank you.

or you can get a proper canbus connector which is just plug and play and no need to connect up to the fuse box

the skoda wiring that comes with the kit is really naff as mine went straight in the bin, as the wiring for the perm +ve and switched +ve was the wrong way round and I ended up getting a canbus wiring kit instead

Ok cool, I'll try to get what I've got working first but may resort to that if I continue to get stuck.

All sorted.  Thanks for your help.

I ordered a couple of piggyback fuse adapters via ebay and they turned up yesterday.  Just fitted the whole lot in well under an hour and it all works spot on.

Just need to get the correct dash trim to fit the kit now.

Cheers

Glad u manage to sort it out, bet it sounds much better than the stream. Just need to ask for pre-fl sat nav surround from skoda, think the plain black ones cost around £5 but the coloured ones may be more expensive

  • Author

Yeah, popped to my local dealer this morning to order the surround.

Plain black is £6 but my vRS has silver so thought I'd order one of those.  Except they're £56!  Absolutely bonkers so I'm going with the black.  I might spray it if I think the silver looks better but I reckon the black will be fine.

Still can't believe the difference to get silver.  Even the guy on the parts desk was embarrassed and apologetic.
